What a super TEAM effort.

All players to be congratulated for giving 100% on a very damp evening.

Grieves and Ozzie up front worked well, although there were times when they both went for the same run or same ball, but overall, good performance against the odds.

First win against Redbridge.

Last 2 away games = 6 points.

Very pleasing win last night, although a little lucky in the end, as the “free kick” that led to our late goal was never a foul, and I thought that someone might have kicked the ball out of the keepers hands as well (hopefully someone behind the goal can put me right on this). I did think we were just about worth a win though, and it was very pleasing to see us try to play football for most of the game, despite the conditions.

Redbridge seemed to be very one-dimensional, just trying to get the ball forward to their massive centre forward, and then feed off the scraps. The worrying thing for me was how often it worked, and for a period in the first half, every time they came forward, they looked like scoring, or causing us problems. We need to be more dominant at the back – I’ve already said that I like Harvey a lot, and Hodge put in an improved performance as well, especially in the second half, but we have to be stronger and more competitive in the air, otherwise sides are just going to carry on hitting long balls up to us. Also, we must stop giving free kicks away in dangerous positions. We know we’re not the biggest team, so why do we continue to give away silly fouls, which is basically an invite to teams to get their big players forward, and deliver a ball into the box?

Anyway, that’s more than enough on the negative side, there were some excellent individual performances there last night, especially, I thought from Hammatt in midfield, whose touch and awareness seems to give him an extra yard of space. There weren’t many occasions when he didn’t find a white shirt with a pass, and if we’re going to be effective, we must keep the ball and keep opponents away from our goal. I can see why some people don’t see what Grieves brings to the side (especially if they’ve only seen him at Brentwood), but he gives us an outlet, and the ability to get the ball forward quickly, and hold it there or win a flick on, which relieves pressure. We just need to get other players feeding off him more, as there were too many times when he won a flick, and there was nobody there to capitalise. Fantastic header for the first goal, although the quality of the ball from Bastian was as good as I’ve seen at any level this season, and you could see what it meant to the players when we scored that – it’s nice to see a bit of togetherness in the celebration.

I’m a fan of Foster too, who doesn’t stop running, and is another big presence up front. He was very unlucky not to score as well, when he was clean through after a defensive mix up, and the only reason he shot wide was because of a tug on his shirt, which could only have been a penalty and 11 vs. 10 for 60 odd minutes, which would have made life easier for us. I’m sure Campbell’s goal will be discussed by other people on here, but what a great strike, a dipping volley on the turn from about 25 yards which gave the keeper no chance. PC is a real match winner when he’s playing well, and if we’re going to win difficult games we need to see much more of the same from him over the rest of the season.

Lastly, it was also positive to hear more encouragement from the fans too. You could see the players responding to some of the crowd, and making that little bit more effort / encouraging each other a bit more. We’re lucky to be one of the best supported teams in the league, with the lions share of the crowd last night being town fans who braved the weather to make the trip, so let’s keep that support positive, be a 12th man (I’m not trying to sound like Delia there) and help the players get back into winning habits.
