Soccer: Borg quits Billericay

Billericay Town coach George Borg sensationally quit last night -- less than 72 hours before the New Lodge side host the Aldershot Town club he formerly managed in a vital Ryman Premier Division game.

The Hampshire outfit are favourites for the title, and the accompanying place in the Nationwide Conference that goes with it, and are expected to bring hundreds of fans to Billericay on Saturday to swell the crowd to a best of the season 1,500 plus.

Visiting supporters were expected to give a hot reception to Borg, one of non-league soccer's most colourful characters, who parted company with the former Football League club last season.

Soon after his departure he joined Billericay as coach, but he's decided to quit that post which he's held for just over a year and told The Evening Echo last night: "This is purely a decision to help Billericay financially.

"It's a well-known fact that Billericay currently have cash flow problems and, if I can help them out by not having to pay my wages for the last eight weeks of the campaign, I hope it will enable them to not have to sell off more of their top players."

There has been an exodus of stars from New Lodge since Christmas as the cost of FA Cup and Trophy defeats hit home.

Borg said: "Of course it's been frustrating for me as coach seeing quality players depart and I'd love to think that my decision will mean others will not have to go.

"I've got tremendous respect for Billericay manager Gary Calder and not many people realise just how much he's done for the club, particularly in the recent difficult times.

"There are some great people at the club, particularly the fans who I have developed a great affection for.

"I'm certainly not closing the door to one day being involved with Billericay again. It's a great club and I want the players to go on from here and push for as high a finishing position as possible."

I would like to take this opportunity to thank George Borg for all the work he did at Billericay Town over the last year.

I spent many hours after games with other members of the BTSA committee talking to George about the game and the non league set up in general.

You will be missed around the place and wish you all the best for the future and look forward to crossing your path soon when you can buy me a pint.

Shame to see him go.

Wish him all the luck for the future and hope that he may return but in a more elevated position...(and I'm not knocking GC here just would've liked to have seen what would've happened if he was the manager).

Good luck George, a true character....
