The view from wobbly towers

Recommended Posts

thought best to leave it 24 hours before posting, in order to let the emotional side subdue a bit and give rationality a chance.

For those who don’t know me, I watch all home Fleet matches, a fair % of away games, I have given financial support to the trust and player pledge appeals and am a shareholder.

My first emotions were this is the last thing we wanted or needed, and could not understand why a group of people with no attachment at all to ‘The Fleet’ would want to take over our club. But now having taken time to let it sink in, my views are summed up as below;

It would appear on the surface that Xmas has come early for us, we have consistently moaned about lack of publicity, lack of interest, and with falling gates, a potential shortfall in revenue. If this goes ahead, all the above concerns to a large degree fall away.

So in essence we should be happy with this proposal and I can certainly see the positives.

So why am I not jumping and skipping around to the degree that perhaps I should bearing in mind the above.

The reason that I am not is that I think the Myfootballclub premise is based on a falsehood. Apart from the asset strippers that take over clubs, the biggest bugbears I can see for fans are cash rich owners whom take over clubs whom they have had no previous involvement, feign interest and then start meddling with on the pitch affairs as if it is a plaything or ego trip, or other owners that take clubs as far as they can with the cash they have, but then leave them high and dry when they get bored or the cash runs out, as the infrastructure and crowds can not support a club at the level its at.

Now I can see that being a problem when you have one a la Abramovich, Romanov, Hamman and at our level Jeff King but at least you have someone to vent spleen at . But when you have in excess of 20,000 anonymous people its much harder and you really start to question is it now really my club or just a reality game. Yes I could join up and play alongside all the other 20,000 but that’s not what I want, as then I have bought into a concept I don’t believe in. And one of the reasons I gave myfootball club a wide berth from the outset.

I am sure the website was set up with the best intentions, and the initial and most active members still have the best intentions but rather than creating an atmosphere where it really is a fans run club, it is now taken the very worst aspects of a cash rich meddlesome owner and exaggerated it. The cult like mantras being used on here, really come across as a set of people who have been brainwashed and that they are doing it ‘Peake’ like style for the good of the game. (Those been around the conference will get the reference)

However, if I can put that big negative above aside and focus on the positives. As mentioned above the prospect of increased revenue streams, increased gates and increased publicity is an incredible boost at a time when the club really does need it. My hope is that whilst all the 20,000+ are playing games with formations, tactics ( if anyone mentions gung ho, they should be KO’d) and players, others behind the scene are using the money kindly supplied by the devotees to myfootball club to tackle the issue of getting more local people to a new ground.

As it is this that will stand the club in good stead, as and when the boredom sets in after we fail to get promoted and interest wains and resources start to drop.

But my hope in the short term is that the brainwashing phenomenon spreads, and more and more of these mugs join up for the good of the game. The cash is greatly appreciated.

If we can put that one big negative behind us, I can't see the Fleet actually losing out on this.

Not saying I like it, but more than willing to strap myself for a rollercoaster of a ride. I will never understand why these people think its a good idea for reasons mentioned above, but will have to accept it and get on with it.

As it stands none of them individually will ever own more of the club than the current shareholders or individually have more influence from us that regularily attend the games.

The Fleet has always been a broad church, and its just got broader.

so when someone leaves cos they finally realise thatr MyFC is mugging them of 35 quid, who replaces them???

In theory someone does. in reality no one [****!!****] does. people will get bored and leave. and no-one will replace them. the club will go tits up. if people leave because we wont climb the leagues and get a new ground (which you have to accept as fact because so many clubs havent, and 700k is barely enough to buy out and get new players!!!)

people will say no to £35 every year and we will be worse off then we are now.
