Possibly the funniest quote I've ever heard a footballer utter whilst playing in a competitive match.

 

Picture the scene. Greg Deacon has scored two goals. A 25-yard volley and a delicate close range lob. City go on the attack with about 15 minutes to go. The ball is 20 yards from the opposition goal, under the control of Dean Stannard. City look promising, attacking, like they might score in a second. Deacon is 40 yards from the opposition goal, jogging, trying to catch up and support his fellow Rezzies. At which point he utters the immortal cry..

Almost as funny as an EFC game some years ago (it was in the Conference, that's how long ago). With about an hour gone two EFC players each had 2 goals. The opposition (possibly Kidderminster - how things have changed!) were complete crap and two hat-tricks were there for the taking. Except that our heroes spent the next thirty minutes trying to score solo goals instead of setting each other up.

Tom S. I feel you slightly misunderstand The words were spoken for a laugh. A joke, if you will. The reserves, no disrespect, don't play at the highest level of football, and it was friendly banter rather than 'pass me the ball so I can score you b######.'

I remember some years back, at the height of Eastenders fame, we used to have a lad called Albert playing for us (can't remember his surname). During one match, while pressing down on the opposition goal, one of his teammates yelled out to him 'Albert, square!'. We all fell about laughing of course (well, it was funny at the time).

Ah. That's the problem with the typed, as opposed to spoken, word. The nuances can be lost.
