Manics - Thanks, perhaps we'll come down for a midweek game soon when Kentish Town aren't playing, it would be good to see you again and I'd like to buy you a pint

Tuesday 13 November 2007
Spartan South Midlands League Division 1
Royston Town 3 Kentish Town 4

Town found themselves a goal in arrears before they knew what had hit them when, following a corner, the ball was turned in past keeper Sam McMullen.
Town were struggling to get out of their own half against a tough tackling Royston side who had enjoyed a fine 3-1 win at high flying Brache Sparta on Saturday and had to wait until the 15 minute mark before testing the home keeper, Paul Butler was on target following some good build up play. Town then started to find their feet and their intricate passing movements stood out like a sore thumb bringing nods of approval from the home fans, a precision cross saw Lee Scott head just over the bar.
Royston continued to look dangerous particularly from set pieces and had a throw in specialist who could reach the goalmouth with ease causing panic in Town's defence. A corner saw Town under more pressure but they were able to clear their lines with the forwardline descending like vulchers hoping for a repeat of the early goal.
Town weathered the storm and began to show their class by spraying the ball all over the pitch giving the home side the runaround, Jonathan Donoghue went close to converting when off balance and Scott was unlucky when his shot lacked sufficient power to trouble the keeper. Scott however made amends minutes before the interval when controlling the ball in trademark style just outside the area and went past two defenders with ease before slotting it past a helpless keeper.
With the scores now level Town wasted no time at all in hitting the Garden Walk turf running in the second period and proceeded to score almost immediately, a loose ball was latched onto by workaholic Kefala Fofana who unleashed a fearsome drive into the back of the net. A few minutes later Town found themselves 3-1 to the good when a speculative shot from distance was defected in for an own goal by a pressured defender.
Town were by now in total control and playing their best football of the season so far running the Royston defence ragged, it appeared that they could score at will however an over zealous linesman flagged dubiously for offside on at least four occasions with Town players through on goal with just the keeper to beat. It was finally left to Scott to claim his second goal of the evening, and his seventh of the camaign, when winning a penalty with 20 minutes remaining, Scott dusted himself down to take the spot kick and send the keeper the wrong way.
With the game seemingly in the bag Town introduced Apple Westcott and Terry O'Leary for Scott and Fofana respectively however when Royston pulled a goal back to make it 4-2 there were some anxious looks on Town's bench. This grew to panic stations some six minutes from time when Royston scored again through a defensive lapse and it was suddenly all hands to the pump to prevent the game being needlessly thrown away, a Royston defender headed over from close range when it appeared easier to score and McMullen made a superb save when blocking what seemed like a certain equaliser right at the death.
Town finally managed to hold on for three points which takes them to the summit of division 1 for the first time this season albeit having played more games than their promotion rivals.

Town Team: S McMullen, Butler, R Quattromini, Kanaris, Malcolm, D Dawson, Rivera, Fofana, Scott, Donoghue, Doyle.
Subs: Westcott, O'Leary

Well, you don't bother congratulating anyone else for that achievment. As I suspect the lead will change hands a few times in both divisions yet, perhaps it is a little early for self congratulatory back slapping. Nevertheless well done for proving a few others wrong. Enjoy, but don't let it go to your head. Pride comes before a fall and all that.

Your goals conceded is very much out of the Ossie Ardiles school of football as I mentioned sometime ago - a little worrying for you as it is for us at the moment. Neither of us (club wise) are the real deal until we can sort that little problem out and others won't take our attempts for promotion too seriously until we do.

How's Mr Dowsett doing at the moment?
