Live Broadcast Of Matches For MFC Members

Recommended Posts

A MFC member posted an hour or so ago (on what is now a locked thread) that 'Ebbsfleet games are (apparently) going to be shown live on the website and the new fans will have the chance to see the team regularly if they can't make the game'.

Can I ask where it says that ?

It's news to me !

Live streaming of Home matches on the Internet direct from the gantry can certainly be done, and it won't infringe on Setanta's TV broadcasting deal....but it will cost a fair bit. A few hundred quid per match at least I would imagine.

The (broadband ?) cable is up on the gantry already, but it was last used about 3 years ago when I did a live game with a crew from Conference TV. Some guy came up there and plugged in from my camera to a laptop. They brought a commentator along as well.

Unfortunately, we wouldn't be able to do this for Away matches though.

If live broadcasts of Home matches have already been arranged without my knowledge though, then I am presumably going to be losing my job ?

Another comment by a MFC member was that they will be given access to view the Manager's unedited Match DVD in order to scrutinise players' performances and pick the team.

Well if that's the case, (and I am still filming for the club), I will want some sort of compensation payment, otherwise it will be an infrigement of my copyright if that DVD is copied and distributed to others without my consent.

I don't know the details - I don't think they've been worked through yet - but as far as I know the idea is to try and get at least some games streaming, yeah. I won't try and pretend to know the legal or financial ramifications of that but I do know it'll either come out of the £7.50 part of the £35 which is the admin fee or conceivably we may vote to pay extra to fund it.

And I don't know your role at the club exactly but I do know the intention is retain all staff that want to stay.

For the benefit of MFC people and others who don't know me, I am a professional cameraman hired by both Ebbsfleet United and Grays Athletic F.C. to film all their First Team Home matches for the Team Managers, provide footage to Setanta (if paid to do so), and produce Match and/or End-Of-Season Review DVD's for the supporters if the demand is there.

I am not an Ebbsfleet supporter and I am not a Grays supporter. I just provide a service to both clubs and to Non-League Football Clubs in general.

Yes, a pay-per-view set-up to put highlights on the club website was briefly discussed by myself and club officials earlier this season. This is something I am willing to help with if paid appropriately for the use of my footage. The same goes for streaming matches live if it can be done.

I don't think there is a problem legally in showing Blue Square Premier matches live on the internet at 3.00.p.m. on a Saturday afternoon, as Setanta only have the TV broadcasting rights and not the internet broadcasting rights. However, this needs to be fully investigated.

Would the 'real fans' (i.e. existing EUFC supporters) have to pay £35 and join MFC just to watch matches on the internet then ?
Is that what MFC are saying ?
Obviously, that would be wrong.

are existing EUFC fans able to have free live access on a game by game basis to the video footage you currently provide?

Hi Cameraman. I don't think anybody knows what's going to happen. It's very early on in the progress, but I'm sure the best person for the job is the person already doing it. I'm sure you'll work things out.

If the matches did end up on the internet - and that's a big if at this point - then someone would have to cover the costs, and make sure you got paid. So it's either stream matches to everybody and hope advertising pays for it, make them PPV, or stream it to members only (and if it were up to me EUFC supporters would be grandfathered in to MFC membership.)

[edit: For what it's worth, if it ends up being members only I wouldn't see it as paying £35 and join MFC "just to watch matches on the internet" The £35 would cover a lot more. Whether you like the "lot more" is another issue entirely.]

And that's entirely reasonable and understandable. He wants to know his job is safe, and to be fairly compensated for his work. I would too.

No they are not.

Basically, I cannot afford to broadcast/'give away' my footage free of charge as I am a professional cameraman trying to earn a living...as opposed to a supporter using a palmcorder without a tripod filming for nothing (and very badly) for the love of the club.

This is what happens lower down the Non-League pyramid, but at Conference (Blue Square Premier) level, professional cameramen are used. They have to be, as it is League regulations.

It's an argument that has been had on here many times.

Not at all.

What I meant was that the fairest system would presumably be a separate pay-per-view payment via the club website to watch the footage, whether you are an existing EUFC supporter or a MFC member.

Not sure where the self-interest on my part comes into it.

If my footage is shown on the club website, I would ask for a set payment per match.

If 50 supporters subscribe and the club break even on that, I would not ask for extra payment if 20,000 subscribe. That extra profit would all go to the club.

What exactly are the existing fans missing out on?

This is the sort of thing I'm worried about.

"No-one cared about them, a [****!!****] little club before we came along. They should be happy to have us..." etc....

Cameraman, I am actually thrilled to hear that you are alrady doing this as one of the difficulties being dealt with on the MyFC forums over the last few days was the issue of live video streaming - quotes of £20k per game (includes the actual broadband streaming) have been quoted. I'd suggest that if you are currently able to film the games and get all the action ON YOUR OWN then you are extremely well placed to profit from the MyFC project as we really need your skills.

As for the pay-per-view screenings on the club website - again it sounds like an excellent idea - can I ask how many existing fans would be willing to pay a small fee for this kind of service?
