Gulls 2-2 Wakering

I said to the linesman before the game this afternoon that consistancy was the key. He told me there was a course on next week if I wanted to have a go myself... Well, I'd hate to think what they teach on this course if Referees like today's think a game lasts 100 minutes - Wakering's equaliser was 99 minutes on the clock!

For 90 minutes I thought we had a decent game, played some lovely stuff in the second half was quite surprised to see that when we played the long ball it was paying off.

Hard to pick a Man of the Match, thought Westy, Stuart & Bourne at the back plus Ruggy and Curran up front all had great games as did Leon as usual.

Ricky is started to look more and more confident as each game goes on, but I don't know what was going on for the Wakering goals.

Shame about Francis' injury, but perhaps with one of our tippy-tappy Midfielders out for what seems be a while, we can now put someone in their who has a bit of 'crunch' in their stride and get rid of those who don't want to be there.

Disappointed with the final result as we were winning at the 90th minute, but these things have a trend to even themselves out over the season. Onwards to Enfield Town!

P.S. What the hell was their Manager doing at the end of the game?

Sorry, not often I'll say this but felt we were cheated out of victory. It really looked as if the referee was playing until they equalised.

He didn't have a clue how long was left and neither did the PA announcer. He announced Ruggy's goal as scored on 85 minutes. That was at 4.42pm and we were still playing 15 minutes later.

OK our defence seemed to dissappear in the last 5 minutes and as Mini Goose said you have to play to the final whistle but there was hardly any stoppages in the second half apart from a minor incident with Bourney and it was hardly like we were time wasting in fact quite the opposite!!!

When they got their first goal back, by my reckoning we had played at least three minutes stoppage time. About a minute later he indicated to the Canvey bench we still had another three minutes!!!

It's times like that you feel the world is against you. I don't like to blame referees for a result. If they make mistakes, don't see things, fair enough but where the hell did he get nearly 8 to 9 minutes of stoppage time!!!

I just can't fathom it out.

How frustrating to be not only winning a game convincingly, but dominating it and then go and throw two points away. There is no doubt whatsoever that the referee was operating in a different time zone but, as stated by someone else, that is no excuse. GWR obviously altered their watches as the second half carried on, we didn’t. Their ‘keeper even commented at the end that he was surprised that it was 2 minutes to 5 when the final whistle went. I think he wanted to get home ready to watch Strictly Come Dancing. Still makes you annoyed though!

I thought our great strength was the way that both Ruggy and Curran played so well up front and obviously enjoyed being ‘target men’. Whenever we got the ball in midfield we could send it up to either of them and their ability to collect, control and turn the ball was awesome. They did it just about every time and it created so many opportunities for us. From there we were able to push the ball around and looked really confident. At one point I turned to Tony Richardson and commented on the way Canvey were playing sexy football. I think he must have misheard me and thought I was making a pass at him. As if. Although, come to think of it, Tony is a bit of alright, in a middle aged, balding sort of way.

By the time I got to the exit gate the GWR manager was trying to lump somebody in the crowd. Dunno what all that was about but bloody poor show, all the same. Mind you, it might be nice to see just a little bit of passion occasionally from John Batch. He does tend to watch the game impassively.

On the whole, a very impressive performance spoilt only by assuming the game was over some 10 minutes before the fat lady started to sing. If we can maintain this sort of skill, flair and commitment I am sure we will have an excellent season.

Agree with Merv. Thought we played some really good attacking football at times especially in the second half.

Could do with getting a result from the Enfield Town game but the last time we visited there was a couple of days after we were hammered 4-1 by Wakering at the Lane. We have become a better side since then.

Nothing we can do about the referee. Still say the amount of time he added was ridiculous but we should have responded to that and we didn't.

Onwards and upwards to the next game.

Absolutely gutted, to be 2 up in injury time and still not win is unbeleivable. When Wakering pulled one back we asked the lino on the seated stand side how long left and he signalled one minute, how the hell can the ref go on and play five extra minutes ? Still we shouldve spent the rest of the game booting the ball out the ground and defended the lead.

Up the Gulls !

Think we're a bit too honest at times. Instead of going for the third maybe we should have run down the clock a bit when they pulled a goal back. Have to admit it was a surreal game.

I absolutely agree. I think he must've colluded with the prat doing the PA in coming up with bizarre injury time. Two minutes would have been forgiveable purely for contingency, but eight?! The ref was taking the mickey.

As far as the performance goes, I was largely pleased with it, other than the injury to Francis and his replacement Clyde. Clyde's attitude was an utter disgrace, as far as I'm concerned. He had no interest in being there for much of the game, bar about ten minutes at the start of the second half (when presumably Batchy had said something to him at half time), he refused to pass to Bourney and lacked any effort.
A real disappointment, as Clyde is a great player normally. Now that Danny is out, Clyde will have to perform better than that in the near future.

That's a fair point LOS, he kept playing until Greggors scored!
