Heybridge 3-3 Saints

Without denying that any team really ought to be able to hold on to a two goal lead in time added on, there does seem to be a pattern this season of pre-pubescent referees finding themselves reffing Ryman Premier League games when all they're really capable of controlling is a playground 5 a side. Are these the bright young things that'll be taking the Conference and Football League by storm before we know it? Bloody hell.

I don't buy it, HB. We've got to stop moaning about officials all the time and start looking at ourselves. I accept last night's ref wasn't great but he was on our side a lot more than theirs. For a start, the penalty he gave to us was highly dubious. Most refs would not have given it.

To give away two goals in the last two minutes of one game may be regarded as misfortune, to do so in two games looks like carelessness - O.Wilde (adapt.)

On the positive side though (which I always am!), for most of the game last night we played so much better then in recent weeks. Granted the defence still needs a bit of work! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Its nice to see us scoring again and the level of confidence rising with certain players. In my opinion the ref was appalling last night. Yes, our penalty was dubious but the incident that sticks in my mind was when their number 8 tackled JC from behind. He had already been booked and the tackle was a bookable offence. So why was he still allowed to play on?

At first, I thought maybe the ref was making up for his height by emitting authroity (suppose to have a psycological effect) but I quickly changed my mind and realised that really he just wasnt sure of the game itself!

Cookie certainly wasnt happy with him.

Better luck on Saturday guys!

I hear and accept what you say about not blaming officials all the time. However bad they are, of course we shouldn't be losing two goals in injury time twice running. And yes, our penalty was a close call, though their second included a foul on Evo and one - and possibly two - offsides in the build up. All things considered, though, the standard of officiating is poorer than I can remember seeing it for a long time, possibly since I started watching at this level, and when it affects the outcome of the game then we do at least have the right to point it out. Even a bit of consistency would go some way to making up for not being able to actually control the game, but Lodge - I think - is booked for kicking the ball away, and their guy does the same later on and nothing's given. I'm just glad it wasn't a dirty game on Tuesday, cos that bloke even managed to contrive a melee and 5 minute stoppage when there wasn't really a bad tackle in the game.

It'll be bitten fingernails on Saturday as we enter injury time unless we've managed to secure a 4 goal lead (and even then I'm not moving till the whistle's gone).

Just putting the standard of officiating to one side for a minute, HB, I'd be interested to know just how much the refs and linesmen, or whatever you want to call them, are actually paid for a league game. Would you be able to enlighten us? And who sets the match fees, is it the Ryman League?

I don't think it's any secret that a ref gets £30 plus travelling expenses and a lino gets £15 plus expenses. I believe the rates used to be set by the management of the respective feeder leagues themselves, but that this was changed for this year so that all three feeders pay the same (to tie in with the new system this year of drawing refs for all games - across the country - at this level of the pyramid from one base rather than several different ones).
