Ron, Kath, Dave, my brother Chris (Birchington USC FC), and my thoughts are with Mark and his family.

Bob was one of the best referee's in the Sunday league and from what I hear a great footballer. I'll be suggesting a minutes silence sunday morning not only for rememberance sunday but for Bob and black arm bands in tribute worn by my team Hotel de ville. I'm totally shocked!

I remember Bob Harrop coming to Margate and it was wonderful to think that we had a "Busby Babe" in the team. The fact that he stayed on in the area to pass on his knowledge, skills and spirit is equally wonderful and he will be missed by many.

So sad.

Yes, well done Ramsgate.

Like many of us I grew up watching Bob play for Margate. Then, as a 11 year old was trained by him for a Thanet representative team. As a 16 year old I remember him refereeing a sunday boys game I played in. As a 18 year old he was my centre half and manager at Ramsgate. Much older, and as a referee I had to take his name.

I am proud to have know him and very sorry to see one of the greats leave us!!

Very very sad news, I recall Bob running Deccar Sports with a crop of very talanted young local players in the Works League and played against them several times during the late 70's - 80's, Bob played at the back for them and was immense even then. Went on to become a great ref too very fair and took no arguments from anyone. I just cannot believe there has been no official comment from our club. They should be ashamed of themselves and need to remedy this very soon.

Have had a word about this today at the ground. Our Chairman was supposed to have all the relevant facts to put up on the main page but somewhere along the line it has been overlooked. This is unlike Malcolm to forget something as important as this. Unfortunately he is on holiday at present but I sincerely hope something will be coming out shortly as KP has now been made aware of this. Rather belated & unforgivable I know.
I too am disgusted with this oversight.
Bob was proberbly one of the best,if not the best player this club has had in its history.
Incidentally there WILL be a "Special" one minutes silence for Bob on Saturday v Maidstone,so I was told today.
Lets all try & make the effort & get to the ground on Saturday if we can,in numbers, even if its just to show our respect & share in the sad loss, but also to celebrate the life of a true Margate Legend.

I have fond memories of Bob in his days with this club.I also recall how he turned out for "Bowketts" in the Thanet Works league" later, in his final days as a player..Yes,he was even willing to turn out for a Sunday league side.I had the pleasure of playing with him in those days together with Sid Jest & Charlie McGlinchey.

Also to referee with him on occasions & run a line for him was a tremendous honour for me personally.

And then to chat with him & his lovely wife on matchdays.

One of the most friendliest & most genuine persons you could ever wish to meet,be associated with or to have known.

Not sure why the main web-site have not posted this. I knew about Bob's death through personal friendship with family etc and wanted to post on here so we can remember Bob. I love reading the posts about Bob's footballing days. Yes he was one of the greatest.
