What a shock - really sad news. Bob was a genuine Margate FC legend and a great servant to local football as a whole. As far as I'm aware he'd still been refereeing recently and last time I saw him he looked fit enough to still be playing ! Thought he'd be the type that'd go on for years but I guess you never really know. Bob also filled out a questionnaire for me a couple of years back which is in the 'memories' bit of my site.

Yes Jeff you are right - he ref myself in a game 3 weeks ago. A great loss. Cookie, me to Iam devastated, dont know any more details as yet. Will PM you when I know.

My condolences to his family.

He was the ref at a match my boy played in at Jackie Bakers a few years ago. I pointed him out as my boy is a United fan.

A few weeks later we visited Old Trafford to do the tour.

Again i pointed his name out on the wall of honour.

How many other of the legendary Busby babes showed the enthusiasm to play at the top, play non league to the extent he did, and when his playing days were over continue to ref until his near 80's.

Bob was an absolute legend in every sense of the word. But above this he was one of the nicest people i have ever had the priveledge to know and to speak to. Loved the game of football and the game loved him back to. Will be missed by everyone, especially on cold Sunday mornings. Manchester United got it right when they included his name on the legends shirt a few years ago. God Bless Mr Harrop.

The true proffesional if ever there was one. I grew up watching this legend in blue. A magnificent leader of men and one of the best headers of the ball i have ever seen. Hartsdown will be sadder for his departure. This is a blow.
