F A CUP, bournemouth away?

As its fa cup week.all over the country young fans of non league teams will be living the dream.So lets go back to the early 60s(this is by memory, no reference books)its after the sunderland game.Gravesend are through to the 1st round proper of the fa cup again,we get plenty of media attention as we are known as giantkillers, out of the hat we come.... bournemouth ,thats ok, oh dear its away, how am i going to get there.i dont know anybody with a car,no motorways either.The club announce that they will charter a train,bloody hell,great idea.Come the day, ive got to be up early to do my butchers round,you know,like the hovis boy on a bike with a bloody great basket on the front.Then its home to get my red and white scarf and bobble hat, plus my hand painted rattle(offensive weapon nowadays),no replica shirts then either.(couldnt afford one if there was).Going to football mum,bit early son,yeah, big game today.Down at the station (northfleet)i meet up with friends. In comes the train, now i cant remember whether it was all the train or just a few coaches,but it was all rather exciting.When we get to bournemouth we have to walk to the ground,cant stop for a beer,too young.We get to the ground, nothing special, i thought our ground was better.Whistle blows, we are playing well,fans are making plenty of noise, no drum though.Half time comes, 0-0 or were we 1 down, doesnt matter.Second half starts,things start to go wrong, Tony newcombe one of the two best centre halfs weve ever had(kenny burrett the other)goes in for a tackle, he doesnt get up, stretchers on,looks like a broken leg,what we going to do, no subs in those days.Flood gates open, its all one way,1,2,3,4,5,6,7, blow the whistle ref, game ends.Of all the players to lose and it was our best one.About 4 hours later im home,did they win son,nah,but it was a good game and if......memories,PRICELESS.

I liked the story.....and would have loved to have been there....but I was only 4 at the time......so I am a Jonny come a bit later I suppose ? Don't blame me, I wasn't consulted as to when I would be born !!
