Thurrock V BTFC

Recommended Posts

Positives: George Lay played 90 minutes and showed some nice touches, good to see him getting back to fitness. Ryan Maxwell played well until going off with a knock. Well taken goal from BWG.

Negatives: Heffer sent off. Injuries to BWG and Maxwell. Disappointing defensive performance, two of the goals came from Thurrock players running past defenders who seemed unwilling to make challenges.

I think it was obvious the players are already thinking ahead to Swansea; the best performances came from the players who are playing for their place. That said, with Semanshia having done well at right back at Folkestone, I don't think our defenders can afford to rest on their laurels.

The game was largely ruined by the referee, unfortunately, how he can determine that a trip near the halfway line is denial of a goalscoring opportunity and a tackle from behind on boot when he's 2 metres out and about to score, isn't is beyond me.

Team

Buckfield, West, Kerrigan, Heffer, Blewitt, Dormer, Abbott (Pooley), Maxwell (Pegg), Boot, BWG (Burbridge), Lay

SNU: Flack, McMahon

Agree about Lay, thought he did well and as usual Dorms put everything into it but other than that it seemed that Thurrock's young side wanted it more.

I did hear an unfortunate rumourette that Heffer may have gone for violent conduct which would mean a three game ban but agree that having given the pen for the foul on Boot the ref should have sent their lad off.

Never mind, I hope we do better on Saturday.

I would disagree that Thurrock wanted it more than we did. When we had 11 players on the pitch, I thought the effort that was put in by the team was good. We even scored the first goal with 10 players on the pitch (lovely goal from BWG).

The difference came with 10 players on the pitch. Our lads were looking tired come mid way through the 2nd half and battled gamely, even to the point of closing the score from 3 -1 to 3 - 2.

I would certainly agree that the ref had some influence on the score, especialy their 2nd where he gave Thurrock a free kick for what was never a foul but he favoured the home side all match...see Si's comment regarding the comparison of two fouls and his reaction. I think you could also look to the walking wounded that came off the pitch yesterday...players don't generaly limp off for no reason...Still, what is done, is done.

The player that most impressed me was Geroge Lay, who's rehabilitation appears to be complete...he even looked a better player than when all those years ago. Definately a player to give us options on the right and with Abbo playing on the left, we appear to have "some" cover on the wings.

Sad to go out so early but we have a trip to Kings Lynn to look forward to and...oh...do I have to mention it...

...Swansea.
