Goals from distance

What have these players got in common?

Holmes (Chelmsford)

Williams(Hastings)

Wiles(Heybridge Swifts)

Gordon(Aylesbury)

They all scored goals with shots from around the 25-30 yd distance against us.

Your views on this would be appreciated.

Together with the above,we seem to have let in goals from in or around the "D" in recent weeks & seen many well saved too(might I add).

Are we making too many rash & needless tackles in and around that area?

Are we allowing opposing forwards to have too much space in front of goal?

Are we not closing them down quickly enough?

Are we back-pedalling too often rather than go towards the oncoming forward running with the ball?

Is SCS brilliant at close range shot stopping but not so good at seeing long distance shots reigning in?

I'm sure some goals from distance were unstoppable & I'm not apportioning blame on any individual, but should we be allowing goals in from this distance as much as we are doing?

Is there more we could do to prevent this happening?

This is just an observation on my part!

Good post Tone and very interresting to hear what others say,I think that the main problem is talking in the defence,or lack of it,midfield should cover our defence as well,we should not let opposeing sides run at the defence without a player going towards him to block, keep back footing and then a shot past lots of legs blocks the keepers view.

Yes-good post with alot of validity.

One hopes that RT and coach Mckimm are equally concerend and more importantly, actively going to do something about it.

Despite our concerns re: defence overall,if just two of thosae long range shots had not occurred, we probably would have 3 more points;and you can't really solely blame defence for long range shots.

Like others, i think its a factor of too much backing off, central midfield maybe not working hard enough defensively (or it not being clearly defined to the players that midfields role when oppo are attacking is to do the challenges between halfway line and 18 yd box-like any business-does everyone know their role and responsibilities ?);and also,SCS does not seem to be at quite such a high standard as last year.

if teams are shooting from distance there are a few reasons why. 1. desperation- losing the game and need to score(like saturday)

2.cant get into the box and are taking potshots

3.confidence-playing well and think they can score from anywhere

4 think the keeper is dodgy

5.just coincedence-gate have conceded plenty of goals, shots from outside the box allways stick in the mind cos they always look so bloody good.

its only my opinon, but i feel weve been unlucky. it wouldnt suprise me if we didnt concede another goal from outside the box again this season.

being a shot stopping keeper myself I would have to say that 90% of the blame lies with the keeper. Now unless it is a really sweet connection which soars into a top corner then really you should be able to get to any point in your goal from 25 - 30 yards. positioning is always critical and like Gumps says part of the reason people will try shots from distance is that they have possibly seen a fumble by the keeper or believe him to be less than agile or again think they are good enough to score from 30 yards. I will say now that the other 10% should be the rest of the teams blame in that because a game of football is about stopping teams getting chances and time on the ball because thats mainly when damage gets done

This also even brings up the subject of walls and the necessity of them. I personally don't consider having anything more than a two man wall from 22+ yards due to the fact that I would more than fancy my chances from a shot from that distance whereas putting a wall there moves your position to a side which gives the taker their target to aim for.
