Look on the bright side

Recommended Posts

Well we did meet Alan Brown on Saturday... He spotted my mum's Kent County Cricket fleece and introduced himself. He may have been slightly offended that we had not heard of him, but he played in the great sixties Kent side. He said go “look in your books” about him. Well Alan I have:

He played for England in 1961/62 and for Kent 1957-1970. He is from Nottinghamshire. So why was he at an Ebbsfleet game? He played football as a centre-forward for Gravesend too.

'fraid so.

Brownie was a big burly fast bowler for Kent in the summer -but a really crap batsman, and a big strong lumbering centre forward for Fleet in the winter. Imagine a cross between Tony Sitford and Nathan Bunce.................well, you get the picture.

That said, the pitch at Fleet in those days wasn't the best - I imagine the "full time professional" players of today would struggle to last 45 minutes on a quagmire, using heavy boots and a waterlogged, leather ball!
