Prior to the match there was a minute’s silence in memory of Harry Martin, who had supported the Urchins for over sixty years, and the main gates were decorated with shirts, scarves and flowers in Harry’s memory.

 

Three changes to the team who beat Dartford in midweek, with John Purdie, Simon Parker and Garry Cross all returning to the starting line up. Team Bath kicked with the strong wind at their backs in the first half, towards the windmill end of the ground. Jordan Bostock sent over a good free kick in the first minute, which Lock confidently headed back to keeper Chitty. Team Bath, with many of their defenders towering above the home forwards, dealt with a succession of high balls down the middle, Gary Warren in particular leading the defence. A long ball to Llewellyn saw his shot touched around the post and Townley’s corner was headed away by Garry Cross. Danny Glozier opened up the left side with a good pass to Kris Lee, but his cross went begging across the goalmouth, but then a long Glozier centre saw keeper Chitty drop the ball as Simon Parker challenged, and Warren was first to react to clear the danger. Team Bath forced the pace, with the strong wind at their backs, and Dean Smith fired a long range shot over the bar. Llewellyn then touched a Green pass on to Townley who ran in but hit his centre high and behind the goal. With seven balls already booted out the ground, it was apparent that the visitors were quite happy to whack the ball away when danger threatened, but it was Team Bath who came forward again, Llewellyn sending the ball out for Thomson who fired his cross over the bar. Llewellyn again, this time finding Thomson , Dale Brightly saving, and a long Lock upfield pass to Canham looked dangerous until Purdie recovered to force a hurried shot which went wide.

 

A foul by Townley saw Glozier’s free kick find Goddard, whose header was glanced wide. Team Bath survived a loud hand ball appeal from a Glozier throw, and the ball fell to Janney, whose shot was well saved by Chitty. Team Bath came back strongly with Brightly tipping Townley’s shot around the post, and Canham;s shot from the resulting corner being blocked by Cross, who hit the ball up to Parker, whose chase was in vain as Chitty raced out to clear. A Smith cross was headed wide by Llewellyn, another Smith long range shot went well wide of the goal, and almost on half time Brightly touched a shot by Thomson around the post.

 

For the third time, the 50-50 jackpot was won by Sir Gary, this time to the tune of £110. Sharon was run off her feet in the food kiosk, her new steak rolls being snapped up, whilst the more discerning opted for the steak pies from Harrods (the one at Gallows Corner) which were on sale in the club shop.

 

The wind dropped at half time and Urchins were kicking towards the windmill end of the ground. They started well, when Dale Brightly’s long kick was headed out by Lamb for a corner. Halle floated the ball over to Cross, whose first time shot brought a good save out of Chitty. A move involving Janney, Cross and Lee came to nothing when Chitty timed his run out of goal to perfection to kick the ball away, and then Team Bath came forward, Thomson making a long run on the left before turning the ball inside to Canham, whose complete mis-kick was thoroughly enjoyed by the EastSide. A long throw in was headed back to Brightly by Goddard, the ball then being played upfield to Janney , who switched play to the left where Glozier came up but directly his cross too close to Chitty.

 

The only goal of the match came when a long ball out of defence was touched on to an unmarked SEAN CANHAM who turned on the edge of the area and fired his shot home, the goal being greeted by total silence, as the visitors had not brought any support with them. It could have been two shortly afterwards when Lock played a good pass through to Llewellyn, who was perhaps put off by the outrushing Brightly and he hit his shot wide of the post. Janney made a long solo run down the right wing, but found no one in the middle to receive his pass, and a similar Janney run was hit just too far ahead of Simon Parker. A Canham run was dealt with by Purdie, whilst a hard shot by Garry Cross was saved well by Chitty. A Parker cross went out for a corner, but Halle’s kick was over hit and Lamb cleared. And then Shane Oakley and Harry Elmes and Joe Keith came on, as Urchins threw everyone forward. A long Brihghtly kick was touched on by Barnard to Elmes, whose shot rebounded off a defender. Brightly then threw the ball out to Glozier who sent Parker away on the left, but Chitty did well to save Simon’s shot from a narrow angle.

 

A bad foul by Thomson on Cross earned a yellow card, with the EastSide demanding a red. A Glozier cross went for a corner, which Halle again over hit, and then the ball was played up to Canham who raced goalwards, where Brightly made an excellent save, and then threw the ball to Janney who raced away at the other end and saw Chitty make an equally incredible save to keep his team in front, the ball running loose to Parker whose shot was again saved by Chitty, having an inspired match. Adams fouled Cross and got a yellow card, and Glozier’s free kick went for a corner, which Halle took, and this went out for another corner, which saw the ball drop in front of Shane Oakley who blazed his shot over the bar. Adams was fortunate to escape a red card with another foul right in front of an extremely lenient referee, and Urchins piled on the pressure, with the visitors dragging out every possible second they could. Goddard, up in attack, went streaking through, and won a corner, which was a big goalmouth scramble, the ball ending up in the net, but the cheers of the EastSide were stilled as the referee awarded a free kick, and then blew for time.

Team Bath survived early Hornchurch pressure and their well drilled defence dealt with a succession of high balls into the area. A goalless first half saw the best chance fall to Josh Llewellyn, whose header went wide, whilst a Simon Parker challenge on keeper Chitty saw the ball run loose, with an alert Dean Smith first to react. Hornchurch came forward in the second half, but fell behind when SEAN CANHAM found himself unmarked on the edge of the area and he turned and fired the ball home past Dale Brightly. Llewellyn went close shortly afterwards when he ran on to a pass from Matt Lock, but Hornchurch had the better of the play. Team Bath, marshalled by Gary Warren, defended strongly, Darren Chitty turning a hard Kris Lee shot out for a corner, and a Janney cross cum shot hitting the side netting. An excellent save by Brightly from Canham then saw the ball returned up the field where Janney ran through and his shot saw Chitty make an outstanding save. Harry Elmes went close, seeing his hard shot turned around the post, and Richard Goddard, powering up from defence, hit a shot inches wide of the post. Shane Oakley came on for Hornchurch, and in the last minute cut in to take a Richard Halle corner, only to hit his shot narrowly over the bar. Hornchurch thought they had scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time, but the goal was disallowed for an infringement. Entertainment value – 3.
