NME'S Top 100 albums of all time

Recommended Posts

Well here's the Top 10

1. The Stone Roses "The Stone Roses'

2. Pixies 'Doolittle'

3. The Beach Boys 'Pet Sounds'

4. Television 'Marquee Moon'

5. The Beatles 'Revolver'

6. Love 'Forever Changes'

7. The Strokes 'Is This it'

8. The Smiths 'The Queen Is Dead'

9.The Velvet Underground 'The Velvet Underground & Nico'

10. The Sex Pistols 'Never Mind The [****!!****]...'

Can't argue with the Stone Roses and Doolittle is fantastic (although 2nd best album ever ), the rest seems quite obvious, except the Strokes it's a good album but will it have the same impact as the pistols in say 20yrs time, I think the Strokes will be remembered as the darlings of the early 00's and that's about it (I've seen them live twice and they were good but hardly blew me away)

Here was the Top 10 from 1993

1. The Beach Boys 'Pet Sounds'

2. The Beatles 'Revolver'

3. The Sex Pistols 'Never Mind The [****!!****]...'

4. Marvin Gaye 'What's Going On'

5. The Stone Roses 'The Stone Roses'

6. The Velvet Underground 'The Velvet Underground & Nico'

7. The Clash 'London Calling'

8. The Beatles 'The Beatles (AKA The White Album)'

9. Public Enemy 'It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back'

10. The Smiths 'The Queen Is Dead'

So the Pixies will be pleased with the rise, The White album and Public Enemy all drop out of the Top 20.

Other noticable albums in the Top 100

11. My Bloody Valentine - Loveless

12 Clash - London Calling (amazing what a death does)

13 Oasis - Def Maybe (Morning Glory at 37)

Nirvana at 15 and 19 In Utero at 15 though and the bloody obvious at 19.

Radiohead (OK Com) Joy Division (Closer), Spiritualized (ladies and gentlemen), Blondie (Paralell Lines) and White Stripes make up the rest of the Top 20.

Other Bizarre / Noteable ones

40 Coldplay - A Rush of blood to the head (Influenced Starsailor the NME says, well thats a good reason to throw it straight out. I would of though Parachutes was better as it was new and fresh when it arrived, not many people would of been surpised by this)

46 Streets - Original Pirate Material (Quite a jump for the boy, a vision of England as definitive as the Clash or Blur managed)

48 REM - Automatic for the people (Green must of been better)

50 Blur - Parklife (thought this was a novelty album )

52 Rolling Stones - Exile on Main St (First Stones album, must be nice for the old bastards to know that bands like Kraftwork are better)

65 Duran Duran - Rio

74 The White Stripes - Elephant (It's not even bloody out yet)

84 De La Soul - Three Feet HIgh (Shaped a generation of dance music - must be higher)

96 The Vines - Highly Evolved (good, but not great)

Very different to the Q Magazine Top 100 just three months ago. "Pet Sounds" was number 99 in that!!

That Top 10 is very strange. "Nevermind" and "OK Computer" - no sign of them!!

Good to see The Stone Roses at number one (it's certainly in my Top 5) and "In Utero" higher than "Nevermind" is so right - it's a far superior album.

Television at four? Not sure I've ever heard of them.

OK Computer was number 16 - Not a big fan, the Indie Chris De Burgh they were famously called on my album review TV show.

That quote came from Tont De La Fou who is on Never Mind the Buzzcocks tonight as number 1 in the line up that contains Richard Wright from Latin Quarter.

Nice Link that, no wonder I'm a DJ
