u18s v Thamesmead.....

...in the Kent FA Cup last night (Tuesday). Rushed to get there, Jamie not finishing work until 5.30, no hot drinks! Great pitch and quite a good turnout for the Mead, only me for the Gate. Thanks to the u15s management for taking the lads. Drive back was horrendous, down to one lane on A2.

Remembering that the kent north league is of a higher standard and that Mead have won 4, drawn 1 lost 0, this was not going to be an easy night. Geting off to a good start Margate looked a different side and showed Mead that they were in a game. Gate took the first 15 but slowly Mead came back and controlled the second 15, the last 15 was even. Both side had few chances, neither keeper troubled. 2nd half and Gate were up for it and ran Mead ragged as 3 good chances came, the second saw a great through ball, something the Gate have lacked, put 11 in with just the keeer to beat. The lob just over the bar. Mead came back as the minutes passed but Margate still pressed as number 10 took on Meads back line with several runs. Mead began to win the aerial battle and some troubled goal kicks put Mead in, strong defence from the Gate kept it at 0-0. Subs came on for both sides but no change until number 10 was dropped back to mid-field to make way for final sub with only minutes to go. On the back foot Mead came down the right with pace, a cross, ping-pong and off one of ours (I think) for 1-0. In the last minute and another run, rebound to a Mead forward and wonderful strick beat the keeper for 2-0 and final whistle. Usual stuff from Meads support but it could have gone either way and a bit of luck seperated the teams. If these lads can reproduce this form in the league things will change. Well done to both side in a good spirited game of great football.
