Chertsey 4-2 Ash

TRS

Recommended Posts

With a limited choice of local NL football tonight, I decided to chalk off another ground and made my first visit to Alwyns Lane for what turned out to be a 6 goal thriller - well thriller may be pushing it a bit, but an interesting encounter nevertheless.

One minute had passed and a stray Ash hand on the edge of the box lead to the referee (who was destined to become star of the show later) pointing to the spot. The penalty was dispatched with aplomb and Chertsey had an early lead. Fifteen minutes later a storming run down the left wing by johnno(!) was halted and from the free kick, Ash equalised. On the half hour, johnno found himself put clear and one on one with the keeper he should have done better, putting the ball well wide of the post. A headed goal on 43 made sure Ash went in to the break 2-1 up.

Second half and two minutes in it was 2-2. A period of Chertsey pressure followed and after a few minutes the game returned to an end to end contest. 15 minutes from the end and the referee decides to take centre stage. The Chertsey 2 and Ash 6 went in for a full blooded tackle, as the ball spun away and play went on they both went to get to their feet and seemed to fall over each other. As this happened the referee appeared to look over, blew his whistle and red carded the pair of 'em! Seemed very harsh to me and I wonder if the ref made the decision based on what he thought had happened rather than what actually happened!

The shot of the match saw the Ash keeper touch over a 20 yard thunderbolt. Sadly for Ash the resulting corner saw Chertsey take the lead with 10 minutes left. This seemed to knock the stuffing out of them and Chertsey made the scoreline a rather flattering 4-2 a few minutes later. The eventual final whistle saw a queue form to have a word with the referee, as the 70 or so hardy souls began to drift away into the chilly streets.......

Well, maybe I didn't see it from the best angle. I think I was swayed by the chorus of 'ee aw, ee aw' from the assembled Chertsey pensioners grin

Actually, thinking about it again, the shot of the match in fact happened during the half time interval. One of your subs somehow managed to hit the table in front of the tea bar (with the milk and sugar etc) at full pelt, resulting in some poor bloke ending up wearing his cup of tea...... laugh

Very good report TRS.

It seems that yet again the standards of the officials in the CCL are being called into question.

When ARE the assessors going to start earning their free entry to grounds ?

I did have a chat with one of 'em at Meadowbank the other week and he intimated that its almost impossible to get people to come up through the leagues.

Any comment, Kroons ?

Big article about this in today's Non League Paper. The new owner/manager is 36 year old Spencer Day. Formerly known as Spencer Trethewy, who older viewers may remember as Aldershot's 'saviour' when as a 19 year old he promised funds that never materialised to save them. We all know the rest.....

He is also a convicted fraudster who was jailed for 2 years in 1994 shocked

The Shots chairman is quoted as saying 'If I sold him six biros, i'd want the cash up front'
