Kentish Town v Sport London e Benfica 10/11/07

Here are the programme notes from Saturday, as you can see we welcomed Sport London e Benfica with open arms so I really don't know why Eagles1981 is making such a song and dance:

SATURDAY 10th NOVEMBER 2007 3.00pm Issue 8 of 2007/2008

KENTISH TOWN v SPORT LONDON e BENFICA

(Molten Spartan South Midlands League Division 1)

Today, it is our great pleasure to welcome the players, officials and supporters of Sport London e Benfica Football Club to our home for the afternoon. The same sentiments are, of course, extended to Match Referee Mr Gary Hart from Watford and his two Assistants, Mr Peter Saggers from Bushey and Mr Luigi Lungarella from North London, whatever the outcome of the contest we hope that they enjoy their brief stay with us and have a safe journey home. Our players will not need reminding to respect Mr Hart’s decisions at all times and make his job in the middle as easy as possible, any not doing so will be harshly dealt with by the Club and hit where it hurts, in the pocket.

Town go into this afternoon’s fixture as high as kites following an excellent 2-1 victory at Hoddesdon Town on Tuesday evening. Town trailed at the interval having spent the first half with their backs to the wall however the second period was a different kettle of fish and Jonathan Donoghue netted his twelfth and thirteenth goals of the campaign to go clear in the race for the Division 1 golden boot award.

Last Saturday saw Town play here against Buckingham Athletic in what was another old fashioned blood and thunder encounter, our visitors surprised us by the way they went for the jugular from the outset and we found ourselves a goal in arrears after just two minutes of the proceedings. Lee Scott equalised ten minutes later only for Buckingham to frustratingly retake the lead on 22 minutes, the stage was then set for Scott to score Town’s goal of the season so far as he literally danced past challenge after challenge to stroke the ball past a bemused keeper to leave everyone in the stadium open mouthed. Town were then somewhat guilty of expecting the floodgates to open in the second half and despite setting up camp in Buckingham’s half a point was all that was gleaned from the game which could cost us dear come the end of April if the season continues in the way it has thus far.

Town are in action again on Tuesday evening when we travel to Royston Town’s leafy Garden Walk home for our first ever meeting with the Cambridgeshire Club. It is this seasons biggest mystery why Royston are currently in the wooden spoon position in Division 1 having been relegated from the Premier Division only last season, indeed they were the bookmakers strong favourites to make a swift return to the top flight however games in hand will no doubt see them pull clear albeit hopefully not on Tuesday. Next Saturday we make the familiar trip up the M1 to the outskirts of Milton Keynes where New Bradwell St Peter’s Recreation Ground awaits us. Games with our good friends New Bradwell are always enjoyable affairs and who can forget our very first home fixture here on 15 September against them in a thrill a minute 3-3 stalemate leaving the spectators breathless.

This afternoon also signals our first ever meeting with Sport London e Benfica who were promoted from Step 7 football last season however the Club have a distinguished history, which can be viewed in this programme, and have been in existence since May 1981. Furthermore they ply their trade at the home of Hanwell Town Football Club having entered into a groundshare arrangement at Reynolds Field at the start of last season which has one of the best playing surfaces in non league football. Incredibly Sport London e Benfica sit proudly in second spot in the division, an achievement that should not be underestimated however it is still early days and inexperience at playing at the dizzy heights of this level could well take its toll later on in the campaign.

Should Town be successful this afternoon and other results go our way, as was the case last weekend, we could well find ourselves in a share of the lead with leaders Haringey Borough redundant today, indeed it wouldn’t surprise us to see a representative from nearby Coles Park hiding in the shadows of the Copthall Stadium come 3.00 this afternoon. Third placed Hoddesdon Town travel to Arlesey Athletic which will not be a cake walk by any means and neither will fourth placed Cheshunt Reserves home fixture with Buckingham Athletic if Buckingham show similar resistance they showed here last Saturday. Bedford and Brache Sparta both have home fixtures against Winslow United and Royston Town respectively and should, on paper at least, get three points although on their day Winslow can be quite formidable.

Programme notes are never complete without a mention of Head Coach Clement Temile who continues to work miracles for the Club and we still have to pinch ourselves every day of the week incase we wake up to find he was just a figment of our imagination. A word must go however to his trusted ‘lieutenant’ Hector Varela who has also done a great job since joining the Club at the start of this season, we are totally confident that between them Clement and Hector, as well as Manager Frank Zanre will take us to the promised land in April.

We hope you all enjoy your visit to the Copthall Stadium this afternoon and once again welcome any ‘groundhoppers’ who may be present, we are delighted to have your company and thanks for coming.

I suspect the penultimate paragraph has been added as an afterthought and didn't actually appear in the programme at all.

In any case, how come there's no mention of the home reserve match on Wednesday evening? Not exactly encouraging any support, is it? Speaking of which, what have the attendances been at your home reserve fixtures so far this season?

Rhode's, how many programmes do you have printed, how many do you sell & how many do you give away free to officials, players & staff?

1: PRINTED ? enter number here ( )

2: SELL? enter number here ( )

3: GIVE AWAY FREE? enter number here ( )

I'm conducting a survey because I'm thinking about writing a book involving S.M.L. teams come the end of the season something along the lines of review of the season, statistics on each club & fans pages from each club & it would be nice to know roughly how many individuals would be interested in purchasing the book.

All Royalty's off the sale of the book would be set up into a special fund for all clubs: more about that later.

Do you think it's a good idea?

Football Man - I don't want to take that risk as I've been caught like that before and money has gone missing, I don't have a cheque book so will have to send cash unless I get a Club cheque off the Chairman and I don't really want to trouble him. Why can't you just PM me your new address, it shows how awkward you are.

Eagles1981 - You haven't commented as yet on the compliments we paid your Club in our programme notes as well as the banquet fit for a king we laid on for you afterwards, why are you being like this just because you lost the game, you haven't done yourself any favours at all in the eyes of the Forum members.
