This is something I have been thinking about experimenting with, as the new camera I am now using has two XLR microphone inputs, one for a commentary mic and the other for a directional (effects) mic.

It would need a volunteer who already has an XLR commentary mic (or is prepared to buy one) to come up in the gantry, plug in, and do the commentary live into the camera while I am filming.

The commentary is recorded on a separate audio channel in the camera, so it can be taken off Setanta's copy, but included on any Match DVD's or end-of-season review DVD's that I might do for supporters.
This is how Alty (and one or two other clubs) do it.

The club won't be able to pay for a commentator, but if the commentary is good and supporters are prepared to buy Match DVD's if we get an e-bay/PayPal system set up like Alty's, then I can give the commentator a cut of the profits. It certainly won't be much though.

I also have a copy of the Alty v. Ebbsfleet DVD as us cameramen often swap footage of our matches, and it is totally unedited from the camera without slo-mo's, titles & transitions, but with commentary.
I presume yours is the same, Graham ?
I normally put titles, slo-mo replays and transitions on my Match DVD's instead of having a commentary.

I normally only produce Match DVD's if I get a minimum order of 5 or more because the editing takes ages, but if supporters are willing to buy them unedited but with a commentary instead, then I can certainly start doing that.

I can then update my website to include that option.

I would also tend to use the odd Anglo-Saxon word and therefore rule myself out, but there must be a few out there who would do it.......? Harry J (...started by the phrase...there now follows a party political broadcast....etc. !) Riverview Red ( we can all throw ourselves into the Thames afterwards !!).....or CG.....commenting on his preferred formations.....our very own Len Goodman !

Cheers,

This was going to happen but then Wicksy (remember him) said the club would deal with it.

'Fraid not. Local area commentator, unobtrusive, no frills & quietly competent. I would guess I have the same disc as The Cameraman.

I too think it would be an excellent idea if we did the same thing, but anyone who's heard the excesses on my own video clips of old will know that I'd be an unsuitable commentator too. However, I'm sure that somewhere at the club, or amongst our supporters, lurks a level headed person who would willingly do the job well.

That's correct...and I have heard nothing since.
Just waiting for a phone call, e-mail or PM from somebody, basically.
If the demand is there, I'll supply.
What I can't do is spend hours editing and producing 'First Half Of The Season Review' DVD's (for example) in time for Xmas, then find out there is some sort of internal wrangle still going on about who is going to pay me for them.

Regarding a commentator's microphone, this is what is needed ! (Note the price).
Maybe Chas has a second-hand one...or can do his radio commentaries from the gantry and plug in ? smile

I really need somebody commentating for TV though. A radio commentary on a TV picture does not sound right.
One possibility is Sportsbeat . They are part of News Associates (Press Association ?) and they were advertising in the Non-League Paper a while ago for students interested in a career in sports broadcasting, of which live commentating on football matches is part of the course.

I will make some enquiries.
It could turn out that we have a future John Motson starting their career commentating on EUFC matches !?

I won't be commentating any time soon from the gantry unless you have a very, very, very, very long ISDN lead. To get broadcast quality(I'm talking sound, not the drivel I utter) I use an outside broadcast mixing desk which plugs into a dedicated ISDN line in the announcer's booth and then I dial up in to the BBC Radio Kent Studio.

I will be doing lradio reports and full live web commentary on tomorrow's game against Exeter. Might even need a summariser if any of you fancy a go.

Looking for highlights package, rather than full matches to start off with.

Forget about legal wranglings - just go ahead and press up 100 DVD Cameraman, and you'll sure sell em to MYFC folk no problem.

You'll eb able to buy equipment from the profits quick enough,

I guess.
