Looked Bleak for a While

Recommended Posts

When Potter took up his position in goal after 15 minutes, I wonder what the odds would have been that we would come away with a one nil win. The wind was proving very difficult to play in and to go a goal down with ten men would have been quite a mountain to climb. But save it he did and what a well taken goal from Boylan 15 minutes later.

Quite difficult to analyse individual performances today and there have been mentions of players with heavy colds.

Potter - Great penalty save and believe he tipped one over in the first half that could of gone in under the bar.

Defence – Had a busier time in the first half but on the whole were pretty sound against a team lacking ideas. Let’s hope Wardy’s groin problem is sorted as quickly as possible. I saw him thump the ground in anger when he got the injury.

Midfield – Again done what they had to do but Minton did not boss much today. Whether it was being closely marked or maybe under the weather but he seemed to lack as much energy today as he normally has. Duffy was a good outlet today but seemed to be more isolated at times when Minton could not make up the ground to help him out on occasions.

Attack – Gregory done well in the difficult conditions with some good lay-offs and nearly scored. Boylan took his goal extremely well and again he never gave up chasing what looked liked lost causes. He also provided some great lay off’s in the second half to JK on the right while being closely marked by two defenders.

Just a mention about the Boreham number 6 Sterling. Distribution and ideas not much but what a handful to play against with those long gangly legs. It seemed he was involved in just about everything and must have covered an awful lot of ground.

Got to agree with most of what has been written above. The wind was the biggest factor - although I felt Potter handled it better than their keeper, who was unfortunate as I am sure the wind turned direction in the second half. There aren't many visiting keepers, who manage to put a goal kick onto the top tier of the nothern terracing.

With 10 men, and a penalty decision againt many teams could have given in to both the opposition and the elemsnts, but all credit to Canvey they battled throughout the 90+ minutes.

Merv's report is now online here, and I have added a few photos to go with his words.

Have to say, well done lads! The spirit and determination today was superb. The conditions were poor and we don't really know the physical state of some of the players who were recovering from a nasty bout of flu.

The wind and wet conditions seemed to even things up and to be honest we would have had a mountain to climb if they had converted the penalty.

Very difficult to single out individuals because everyone gave 110% for the entire 90 minutes but I think Wardy, Benno, Dobbers, Lee B and of course J.K deserve a special mention.

Again well done lads. It wasn't sexy football today but as long as we give 110% it does not matter.

Spirit and determination win you championships as well as flair and we've got both of these in abundance.

Shots we'll have to match this, if they're gonna win the title.

A 1-0 win for Canvey is quite good I suppose, but Aldershot smacked 4 goals in yesterday, thus eroding the goal difference we had over them. We had better find our shooting boots because this goal dofference thingy might become very important in a few weeks---or even COSTLY.

Yeah but Remember we beat Hampton 4-0 and Shots only beat Wood 1-0 at home so they've done no better than us.

After yesterday the real fun and games start. Shots have just two games against lower half opposition from their final twelve. Only at home to Enfield and Aylesbury can you see them increase their goal difference significantly, the rest of their games will be very tight. Our main concern is not neccessarily scoring goals but keeping clean sheets.

Our main concern is waiting for Aldershot to slip up. We could win all our remaining games this season and still not go up!! It's all on Aldershot dropping points. Even if we beat Aldershot and both teams win all their remaining games, no matter how unlikely it is, it would've all been for nothing as we'd still be spending next season in the Ryman.

Don't forget St.Albans, we beat you and shots away, you two draw when you play each other, Aldershot still have to play virtally the whole Top 10 away from home, still a few twists and turns left.

All our March games are winnable, April could be interesting,

Now watch us lose on Tuesday to Heybridge <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Thing is though, us and Shots have two games in hand on you. You're going to need a really good run to get into it but who knows anything could happen!

Cheers - I am hoping to get to most games between now and the end of the season - evening games are a bit of a lottery as the floods are often to poor for any decent photos.

Although pitch side might be the best place for the Aldershot game smile.gif It certainly was over at Gravesend.

If I get any decent photos I might print them up and perhaps put them in the clubhouse.

Going to order a new camera - that ought to be with me, by next month. It might well improve some of the shots, especially night games.

I wish I could afford the new Canon, but at £7,000 for just the body, it is a little beyond my means - it will be nice when it comes down to around 3 thousand.
