Young Punks Go To Wembley – A Music Retrospective

In this day and age, with all the electronic gadgets available to keep a young (or even old) teenager entertained, it is difficult to appreciate that back in the ‘70’s it was either sport, music or the opposite sex that kept us all amused (and if you were lucky, a combination of all three). In the “hang over” years of the 1960’s, in the wake of The Beatles split, music was still alive, vibrant and diverse. At the time, when Boy and Girl bands like Take That and Spice Girls were a distant twinkle in the record producers eye, CD’s were part of the space age technology, our records were cherished bits of black plastic complete with scratches, clicks and jumps. We had Abba, Led Zeppelin and Brotherhood Of Man (!!!).

In the year 1977 bands like the Sex Pistols had all but burnt themselves out in good ‘ol Rock ‘n’ Roll fashion and the Jam were making political statements in 2 and half minutes of vinyl pleasure, encouraging the youth in to some air punching, intense anger. Between 1976 to 1979, you were either a Mod, Punk or some hippy clutching on to that roll up, listening to some guitarist trying to express himself in 25 minutes of non stop, nonsensical, musical dribble (and by the end of the song, you were quite probably joining him as regards the “dribble”).

Of course it wasn’t all rock. The 70’s and early ‘80’s was also the halcyon days of the disco, with Chic, The Bee Gees, The Jacksons and the likes of Joe Tex informing us that he wasn’t “Gonna Bump No More With Big Fat Woman”. And it was also the era for films like Saturday Night Fever and Grease. If you were yourself a teenage bloke, just starting out on love’s great adventure with a girlfriend, then it was a twice weekly visit to the cinema to see John Travolta strut his stuff in the hope of a “close encounter” in the back row (and political correctness had yet to become an issue as well – Ed). And don’t forget to get her home by 10 p.m.!!!

And then there were the match days down at New Lodge. By the early 1980’s we had our very own DJ / public announcer in the shape and form of Neil Wiltshire. Leaning towards the soul side of the pot holed and opinioned field of musical taste, Neil always kept us up to date with the latest sounds between team and club announcements.

Of course those days, singles (as they were then known), stuck around in the charts for 12 to 15 weeks and they were not necessary album tracks lifted to promote an album. If you want to have a trip down nostalgia’s warm, fluffy and comfortable road, check out the top five from the three years when Billericay Town were triumphant Vase winners.

In the same vein, and of no interest at all to Ricay fans, tunes that were top of the charts when England won the World Cup, and the two times that CCFC won the Southern League championship (in my lifetime), were as follows:-

July 1966 = Out of Time - Chris Farlowe and the Thunderbirds

May 1968 = Young Girl - Gary Pucket and the Union Gap

April 1972 = Amazing Grace - Pipes and Drums and Military Band of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards.

How significant are those parings:-

England winning the World Cup = Out of Time

CCFC winning the Southern League championship (1) = Young Girl - the month I got engaged to my (now) wife, who was 59 today.

CCFC winning the Southern League championship (2) = Amazing Grace.

Apologies in advance for boring the pants off you.

What may be significant is that Young Girl was knocked off her pedestal by Jumpin Jack Flash bigshock

brilliant ..gazza ....just reading it took me back thirty years to the start of my R.A.F. career I couldn't recall the songs from april 1977 as that coincided with square bashing and bedpacks, ironing uniforms and bulling boots...time stopped still for that initial six weeks..but after that period...it was good to be 18...during the punk era ...music came alive for me ...even though I was and am a fan of GENESIS and PINK FLOYD music...some where in my record collection I have a tape of the LONDON radio station GLR....when they played a whole hour of punk stuff...the good bits that were around at the time...memories...just where did those years go !!!!!!!!
