FOOTBALL LEAGUE CLUBS ENTER THE FRAY

By Chris Evans

Coca-Cola Football League clubs Colchester United, Southend United and Dagenham & Redbridge are amongst the names who’ll be introduced to the Essex Senior Cup when the live Third Round Draw takes place on B.B.C. Essex this Friday, 19th October, between 4:30-5:00pm.

The station’s Sports Editor Glenn Speller will present proceedings, joined by F.A. Skills Coach Matt Joseph and FansFocus.Com’s Ian Walmsley who’ll conduct the Draw, which could pair some of Essex’s biggest clubs with those lower down the pyramid towards Steps Five and Six such as Essex Senior League team Southend Manor.

Manor were victorious, 2-0, against Stansted in Round Two which also saw the presentation of Player of the Round made to the Airportmen’s Greig Taylor before his team’s defeat at the Southchurch Park Arena. Stansted forward Taylor was proud to receive the award after his endeavours against Hullbridge Sports in the First Round.

Taylor netted a hat-trick as they soared to a 4-0 success on Tuesday 11th September, and he collected his trophy on the pitch from Dave Threadgold, Chairman of the Cups & Competitions Committee. “It was only Greig’s second game for the Club,” revealed Stansted’s Club Secretary Terence Shoebridge. “He scored twice in his first game against Eton Manor then went one better next time out and got a hat-trick in the Senior Cup.”

Taylor’s clinical finishing saw him score in the 20th, 65th and 89th minutes, although it was strike partner Danny Dobson who grabbed the headlines. “I remember Danny’s goal – that was a bit special, but Greig’s were all tap-ins,” Shoebridge quipped.

It has been a meteoric rise for Taylor, who was turning out for Takeley in the Essex Olympian League last season. “Greig’s a local lad,” Shoebridge explained, “and he wasn’t getting a game at Takeley. He asked if he could come and train with us and only got in the starting line-up against Manor when another player failed a fitness test on the day of the game. He’s been on the bench quite a bit lately, but this is a learning curve for him and we expected it to be tough coming in from Step Seven football,” he added.

Talking about the Club’s aspirations during their 2-0 extra time defeat to Manor, Shoebridge continued: “Last year was the worst season I can ever remember – I think we’ve got as many points in the League now as we did in the whole of the previous campaign! We’re short of five players tonight, but we know that Cup matches are always hard, it is a case of trying to go as far as you can.”

The Draw also gives Matt Joseph, formerly of Leyton Orient, the opportunity to expand on the new F.A. Skills Coach project, which aims to provide free coaching to the targeted 5-11 age group in a bid to help individual children be the best they can and gain enjoyment from the national game.
