Waltham Abbey 2 Enfield Town 8

lovely stuff

I took great delight in leaving a message for Gazza to say the score was 7-1. What I forgot to say was who was winning. Low and behold I received a call asking me what an earth was going on? I replied that it was comical. Everytime we hit the ball it went in their net!

Well done to all, especially Stevie Velandia who assisted the front runners and Paul Campbell who nearly scored on numerous occasions.

Oh, and well done to the goalscorers. Bit disappointed we only got 8!

8 against Wabbey, 7 against Ilford both on a wet Tuesday evening, at the two worst grounds, in the two worse strips at my two most disliked clubs............and I missed them both!!!

Indeed Dad was being a little mischievious in his reporting, but hey remember throw a cup of water get a bucket full back!!

Great result well done to Crace & Hammatt on their hat-tricks, more of the same Saturday please.

Great result and some cracking goals. I couldn't believe the attitude of Abbey's outfield players at the end. There keeper had a poor game (obviously) but was left sitting in his goalmouth absolutely gutted when all his team mates had already left the pitch. What a disgrace. They should have gone and cheered his up rather than leave a team mate sitting there.

a very strange game. looked much better when Grieves went off, but not his fault particularly as we looked ok in the first half. we hit the bar as well. nice of us to let Wabbey have a couple of consolation goals. I especially liked the stadium announcer being so annoyed that out 7th goal was offside. as if it mattered.

I think that we played so much better second half because we were up against 10 men for most of it and we had space glaore, although for the last 5 or 10 minutes Stephens went off for us, as we'd already made all our subs. I'm a fan of Grieves, he lets us adjust the way we play depending on match circumstances, we can now hit quick balls from back to front without knowing that they'll come straight back at us, and put us under more pressure. Having the option to do this means that it's more effective when we do play the short passing stuff that we showed we can do last night, as we have a plan B to fall back on as well.

This was the perfect game for Velandia to come into at half time, a decent, slick passing surface, acres of space and time on the ball, and he didn't disappoint. I was impressed with Hammatt in midfield as well, he's an intelligent player who keeps the ball and makes the right decision almost all the time, Bastian, Rudi and Jones also had good games (although Jones probably should have scored twice!). Goal of the match was Crace's third for me, we played some fantastic stuff in the build up, and he took it superbly. Perhaps I'm being harsh on Rudi though whose 35+ yard strike into the top corner was a goal of the season contender as well.

As someone mentioned on Saturday, Adam Gant makes a big difference to the side, not only being a very tidy defender, but also being composed on the ball, and always looking to find a Town player rather than just clearing his lines. I seem to only come on here when we don't do so well, so it makes a nice change to be talking about a very good team performance. Let's hope that we take plenty of confidence from last night, in my view we've always had the ability to do this to sides in this league when we're on song, it was just a case of things clicking. Here's to more performances like this one for the rest of the season...

For the record, the team was: Hasler, Gant (Tickner), Allen, Stephens, Campbell, Bastian, Jones, Hall, Hammatt, Crace (Foster), Grieves (Velandia)

We really should have scored at least 3 more goals in the second half. Our play during that half was a joy to behold.Abbey made the mistake of not getting tight to us or shutting us down,as such we were able to play the football we are capable of but rarely put into practice.

Getting onto formations/selection..We seem to have now found our ideal wing-back combo Campbell/Bastian.So lets play them every game and not tinker about with those positions. No Magona/Dickie for the last two games,as such i feel the distribution from the back has improved.Hammett looked comfortable in his 'new' role behind the front two in the first half.Grieves gives us another option which will be invaluable during the rest of the season, but Velendia played a blinder after replacing him at half time.So it will be a difficult call for jim who to leave out on saturday. It seems the team is fairly settled now (apart from maybe the central defensive positions).I've a feeling three or four players not involved for the last two games may now leave the club, but i'll accept that for a more settled united starting 11.Hasler again looked comfortable in his all round game, his collecting of crosses and kicking game inspired confidence, but yet again he lets himself down by letting in a shot at his nearpost that he really should have stopped. If he can work on this weakness in his game,he could become a big assett to the club.

Not a lot Chops; they had about eight players out, and played Dominic Gentle (emergency signing?) and Brad Brotherton's little bro, as well as a handful of reserves. When they had a player sent off, their heads went down collectively (Chalky and Marc Sontag excepted), and the Towners had a party at their expense!

Actually, I would argue that would be a good thing - the squad is too big, and gives Jim too many options; the temptation to tinker is hard to resist. that said, I would be sorry if, say, Richard Georgiou or Ozie Foster were to leave.

To be honest,i havn't seen Ozie Foster produce anything to suggest he could be a regular in the team.Georgiou is capable of scoring spectacular goals, but again, i havn't seen anything in his alround play to suggest he could become a regular in the starting line-up.(although i would have had picked him over Ozie for a place on the bench last night). Can't see Magona or Dickie regaining a start at present.Would be dissapointed to see Jamie Nay leave, but as a right-back rather than a wing-back,he is at a disadvantage in getting a regular start.I still feel Edmunds is a great prospect and should be first choice off the bench or if there are injuries up-front.

Well, let's not get too carried away or decide that last night's squad is all we need to progress to the UEFA Cup. Without taking anything away from a great result, it seems to have been against 10 men from an already decimated squad of reserves etc. But it was on the back of a home win (not always our strong point) and goals had to put away, so let's hope the improvement will continue and we can turn in consistently good performances.

I would certainly agree though that the team should never be changed just to give players a game, like a pub team. Maybe we'd have found our best line-up/formation/tactics sooner with a proper pre-season programme.
