Farnborough v Slough Town - Updates

Quite simply, beaten by a far superior team...ripped to shreds for the majority of the game, everything we tried seemed to go wrong, be it passing it around, playing the through balls for the wingers or long ball. Nothing seems to work when you play a team like that. It reminded me a lot of the game at Boreham Wood last season.

I think that now that Davies has gone Lee Charles will get a lot more of the ball, it was obvious last night that from now on everything will have to go through him, which is a problem because he seems scared of having a pop at goal. He still has good touches and ball control, but unfortunately strikers need to try and put the ball in the net, not bring other players in when they have got into the box like he did last night a couple of times.

I do not think that getting rid of the players will work, we have a good mix of experience and youth in the team now, but something is still not working. Unfortunately our youth players have little upper body strength and are easily pushed off the ball, and our experienced players have lost their pace.

Quite simply we need to keep working on what we have, we do not have the time to bring in a new team like some people are suggesting, we have to work with what we have. I believe that we have a team good enough to meet the minimum target of survival this season, we knew it wasnt going to be an easy season, and if we keep trying hard we should get enough points to stay up.

It was very interesting to see last night the meeting of the Slough fans behind the goal at half time, a very serious discussion that we have all had many times before about what is going wrong. It was good that it was then decided that we should get under the cover and make a bit of noise despite the fact that we went on to concede 2 more goals.

Oh well, must keep the faith and look to the next game, come on you Rebels!

I agree with BR, Farnborough will be up in the promotion mix come the end of the season.

I thought that yet again, the youngsters ran their socks off, they chased and got stuck in with lots of enthusiasm, if not body weight.

Out of the rest, I thought that Barnard and Mets were probably the best.

Farnborough had very fast strikers, and they caught us on the break many a time after drawing our defence up to the half way line, so that they could run though.

Farnborough's defence did look as though it would leak goals, but with no-one actually shooting that often, we weren't the team to do it on the night.

It will be interesting to see how the team plays on Saturday against Bridgwater.

I also think that ARAS has a good point, we need a mix of youngsters and experience to keep us in this league.

The formation was 4-4-2. Stanley upfront with Charles. In my opinion Slough played with 10 men for most of the game. Stanley (who I think will become a good player was wasted - we therefore struggled all match and effectively played with 10 players). Against a team like Farnborough and with Sloughs leading goalscorer gone, Slough should have played 4-5-1 - with Charles upfront by himself. This would have packed the midfield and kept the game tighter. Slough would have then stood a slim chance of winning/drawing. I believe also we would have had more chances at shooting/scoring.

Apart from not pulling the trigger I thought Charles played quite well, particularly in the channels. When he picked the ball up wider the Farnborough defence was in disarray.

I cannot understand why we started 4-4-2. OR once it had been tried the formation quickly changed to 4-5-1? or am I missing something?

Changing formation/tactics when things clearly arn't working seems to be beyond the capabilities of the manager/coach.

I thought it was clear quite early on that although Stanley Mugisha was trying his hardest he was clearly too lightweight and wasted up front.

I think switching to 4 5 1 might have help stop their midfield feeding their two speedy forwards who were causing all sorts of trouble to our defence. There was numerous times when Murphy was caught in two minds who to mark when a midfielder was breaking with the i.e their first goal.

Having never been in Wilko's position, I would imagine it's very hard to manage the side whilst trying to play midfield at the same time. He's clearly not being helped by injuries and suspensions, but then we always seem to be struggling for players, especially with the money problem. It's an unenviable position.

Agreed - If Wilko plays there must be someone else calling the shots - Otherwise the team will suffer and the opposition gain. I believe this happened on Tuesday.

If we play strong oppostion we need strong decisions - we may not win but perhaps we would be in the game.

If you look at things logically, when Wilko is making forward runs he cannot see if the defence are pushing up properly for offside or marking tightly or are the full backs making runs to join in the attack.

Conversely, when he's running back chasing a player or to do some defending he cannot see if the forwards are covering an attacking wingback or tracking back to keep onside.

Basically he hasn't got eyes in his backside so logic says that somebody who can see the whole of the pitch all of the time is better positioned to make any changes etc.
