Are you finding the site slow?

Hi,

 

I am getting various reports from time to time with people find the site slow.

 

The server is running smoothly at the moment and the load is low, so that is not the problem.

 

It could be images and other items that we pull in from other sites - where possible I try and host the images locally, but it is not always possible.

 

I have temporarily disabled some of these items, but if you are still getting issues, please could you do the following.

 

1) Check your ISP - other forums are experiencing similar 'issues' and they cannot all be having issue with their servers - often the speed of ISP's have an effect - many ISP's can only offer low prices by increasing the number of users sharing one connection - if you have a contention of 50:1 it means that up to 50 users are sharing one 'line'.

 

2) Please disable the right column via http://www.nonleague.co.uk/forums/ubbthreads.php/ubb/editdisplay - the shoutbox has been known to cause issues for some browsers / users. I have also enabled the option to disable the left column as well, but in order for me to do that, I am going to have to increase the number of adverts for each, by having a small advert beneath the first post in each thread from google. This will not affect speed. Removing the left column may also assist some, but not as much as removing the right column.

 

3) Please reduce the number of posts displayed per page and the number of topics per page via http://www.nonleague.co.uk/forums/ubbthreads.php/ubb/editdisplay - we recommend limiting these to 20 - whilst this will create more pages in a thread, it will mean less images and other items are being loaded for each view.

 

If you have done all this, especially points 2 and 3, and you are still getting issues, please PM or open a thread in the Site News & Suggestions forum and let me know what is happening (i.e. is the page almost loading, but the last bit isn't or if you get errors or nothing at all). The debug at the bottom of the page should say something like

 

Generated in 0.031 seconds in which 0.001 seconds were spent on a total of 8 queries. Zlib compression enabled.

 

if it is a lot higher than that I need to know.

 

Please let me know your browser and it's version & which page(s) are slow - is it the index page, the forum page or a thread etc.

 

The more information I have the easier it is for me to assist.
