John Purdie back, Donny Barnard in the starting line up, having joined after previously playing for Grays, Dagenham & Redbridge and Leyton Orient. A lack of away support was offset by some floating support looking for a Friday night match, and the attendance of 610 was reasonable, given that on two prominent web sites the match was still shown as being scheduled for Saturday.

 

Hornchurch survived an early scare when Stanley Muguo took a quick return pass from McCollin and fired his shot narrowly wide, whilst a good move started by Bostock and carried on by Cross and Elmes saw Janney racing goalwards, only to be pulled back for offside. Hornchurch took the lead after six minutes when GARRY CROSS created space for himself on the right and fired home from a narrow angle, the resulting shower of tickertape cascading all over the running track. Hamlet was quick to come back, a free kick by Beveney being hit straight at Brightly, but Urchins could have increased their lead when they were awarded a free kick, which Barnard rolled sideways for Danny Glozier to power in a shot which was blocked right on the line. Simon Parker then went racing clear and keeper Ceesay rushed off his line to save at Simon’s feet, conceding a corner which Tomlinson sent over and Richard Goddard came up to power his header onto the roof of the net.

 

Hamlet looked dangerous when a quickly taken free kick was played to Chattaway, whose shot was stopped by a well timed Tomlinson tackle, and play swung back up field when Bostock took Purdie’s pass and slotted the ball up to Janney, whose run took him past two defenders, before being crowded out. Janney played the ball back to Bostock, whose centre was headed away by Mangodza. Parker played an excellent pass through to Harry Elmes whose run was halted by May, who conceded a corner, and Tomlinson swerved the ball over, for Richard Goddard, whose header again landed on the roof of the net, with the EastSide thinking it was on its way into the net.

 

A brief spell of Hamlet pressure saw May find McCollin whose well placed centre was held by Brightly, and then a complete mix up in defence occurred, resulting in Brightly bringing down McCollin outside the area and getting a yellow card in the process. The free kick was taken by Beveney who hit his shot over the bar. Urchins regained their supremacy and went close after Muguo had conceded a free kick. Bostock sent the ball into the goalmouth where it was headed away for a corner, from which Simon Parker hit in a first time shot which was cleared off the line for another corner, which came to nothing as Aris cleared comfortably. A Hamlet corner was easily dealt with by Brightly and a Janney run ended in another Urchins corner, which Janney took and the ensuing goalmouth scramble eventually saw the ball played back to Janney whose cross was well saved by Ceesay. Shortly before half time the defence was caught wide open and the ball was played across to BILLY CHATTAWY whose neat shot eluded Brightly to bring the scores level, and almost on half time Paka shot wide when well positioned.

 

Half time, Treeboy comes into the shop, admires the merchandise, but leaves without buying anything. And Max handed out the £100 jackpot winning prize to a delighted Digge the Cat. General opinion was that Urchins would step up the pace in the second half, against a well drilled but defensive Hamlet side. And so it proved, as only four minutes had elapsed when Garry Cross was scythed down in the area, and needed a long spell of treatment, whilst MARK JANNEY waited patiently and then slotted the penalty past Sheikh Ceesay. It could have been three when Simon Parker ran clear but he was pulled back for offside, and then a Tomlinson free kick picked out Goddard, whose header for the third time in the match skimmed the bar. Parker to Janney, who went clear and his shot was saved by the inspired Ceesay, whilst a Hamlet breakaway by Schoburgh was stopped by a neat Glozier interception. A long run down the wing by Mark Janney saw the ball played back to Elmes whose cross was touched back to Richard Halle, whose own cross went begging across the face of the goal.

 

A long up field punt by Brightly saw Elmes home in, with May tackling to give away a corner, which Tomlinson took, and promptly received the ball back again, but this time the cross came to nothing as the flag went up for offside. Simon Parker earned applause when he controlled a high ball out of defence, and slotted it inside to Harry Elmes, who turned and shot, with Ceesay diving to his right to save on the line, and it was Ceesay again, this time punching away Tomlinson’s corner kick.

 

A Janney centre was turned out for a corner by Paka and Goddard came up for the fourth time in the match to head a free kick inches over the bar. A long Brightly kick was touché don by Elmes to Parker and then back to Glozier, who played the ball up again to Parker, who just failed to reach the ball before it ran out of play. Purdie to Parker, and then on to Elmes, and another fine save from the cross cum shot. A Brightly free kick found Garry Cross, whose shot was stopped right on the line , Janney following up and Ceesay saving well yet again. A long centre from Joe Keith came to nothing and a brief appearance by Amos Foyewa sent shivers of alarm through the visiting defence, and the final score of two one did not do justice to the overall performance. Andy Tomlinson was named a Urchins player of the match, but many considered that keeper Sheikh Ceesay had been the main factor in keeping the score down as Urchins could have run by several more goals.

The decision to switch the match to a Friday proved popular, with a crowd of 610 turning out on a mild night. Hornchurch survived an early scare when Stanley Muguo took a quick return pass from McCollin and fired his shot narrowly wide. Hornchurch took the lead after six minutes when GARRY CROSS created space for himself on the right and fired home from a narrow angle. A hard drive form Danny Glozier was cleared off the line and keeper Ceesay made a diving save at the feet of Simon Parker. Richard Goddard twice moved up for corner kicks and each time saw his header land on the roof of the net. Dulwich came back strongly, Stanley Muguo shooting wide when well placed and a mix up on the edge of the area saw home keeper Dale Brightly receive a yellow card, the free kick which resulted being hit over the bar by Shawn Baveney. Parker had a shot cleared off the line from a corner, and Hamlet levelled on 40 minutes when BILLY CHATTAWAY finished off a good move involving several players.

 

Hornchurch regained the lead shortly after half time, when Garry Cross was brought down in the area, and MARK JANNEY calmly slotted the penalty past Ceesay. Continuous Hornchurch pressure saw keeper Ceesay make several fine saves to keep Hamlet in the match, , whilst Goddard again sent a header inches over the bar, and a low cross from Harry Elmes went begging in front of goal, whilst Simon Parker twice went close to scoring. Hamlet tried hard to get back into the game, but rarely troubled the strong home defence, for whom John Purdie and Jordan Bostock were prominent. The player of the match was Sheikh Ceesay without whom Dulwich would have been on the wrong end of a high score.
