British Gas Business Southern League Division One South & West club Taunton Town could move to a new multi-million pound stadium within two years.

The club's chief executive Mick Rooney said: "We have reached a preliminary agreement with a local developer to sell our ground and move to a new purpose-built stadium.

"We announced our intention to move earlier this year and negotiations have continued with a local developer.

"These talks take time and that is why it has not been possible before now to say any more.

"Things are beginning to change drastically within the club. It will soon be moving at a fast rate."

Rooney also disclosed that the club will be holding an extraordinary general meeting at the Peacock Club at which all five members of the board will be asked to stand down and the board re-formed. "We will be inviting local members of the business community and working directors to join the board as we move forward in a positive way.

"We have been accused in the past of not moving forward, of standing still, and in some cases, going backwards. Not any more. We need local business to come forward and invest in the club.”

Rooney continued: "Our aim is to move to a new stadium as quickly as possible - with Conference football being our target.

"Taunton is big enough to support such football because we have the population and there are no major clubs within thirty miles of us.

"We want our manager Gary Domone to have the best team and facilities possible to compete with the best non-league clubs in the land."

Rooney also stressed that Tom Harris will be remaining as club chairman. "Tom has been a wonderful servant and will remain involved in the day to day running of the club," he concluded
