Stadium plans renewed

FORMER Slough Town FC chairman Alan Thorne has renewed plans to develop Wexham Park stadium.

The renewed application, which the Rebels received planning permission for in 1997 when Mr Thorne was chairman, has been submitted by the same company, Anthony Monk and Associates.

As reported by Sport Observer in December, plans were lodged with South Bucks District Council on behalf of Slough Town FC for the redevlopment of the stadium.

The plans are for a two-storey extension to the main stand, together with new stands, terracing, banners, turnstiles, WC facilities, ancillary accommodation and the addition of a false pitched roof to the clubhouse.

Do you think they are trying to get back involved or is Deaner further along than we think in getting a long term lease signed with them.....hmmmmm interesting

Don't think so. Beaconsfield are desperately trying to get their ground upgraded to get promotion into the Ryman so I can believe it would be good enough for the Premier. As for Windsor and Burnham, don't make me laugh!

That would be good, but how many times, in Slough's recent history, has defeat been plucked from the jaws of victory?

What are the chances that this will be resolved _before_ the last possible day before next season...?

(Perhaps messrs Deaner and Thorne thrive on the nervous energy expended by Rebels fans wondering what will happen to their beloved team...?)

must have a bit on this, but my grand dad used to work on the council, and he says that Thorne senior , who got sick at the end of the 97/98 season, had nothing to do with the events at the end of that season, and that it was all to do with the grandson. maybe we should aim the vitriol at the junior partner, as this decision for refurbing the ground is not the actions of someone who wants to make a profit on the sale of the land ala Brighton and the Goldstone? (unless of course by improving the ground he can shaft us for a higher price in rent, or get a higher price for the land)

fully aware of this Liam, it was Byron Thorne rather than Alan who did us 5 years ago. Would just be nice to get some sort of idea about what is actually going on. Perhaps Thorne has got plans to buy one of the other teams, give them our ground and really rub it in

I personally don't think that Thorne Snr is up to anything like that. What happened in the past was unfortunately due to sickness and the inactivity of Slough Council. From what I understand Alan T got fed up and succumbed to his Football hating inept son Byron.

For me it all started to go wrong when Thorne Snr fell out with Bob Pearson. What I'd give to know where we would be now if that hadn't happenned.

It's a shame that at a time when we should be talking promotion, there are more worries about the clubs whole future.

We still have one of the best fan bases for non league football despite being kicked in the teeth every season, season after season. 49 seats cost us the conference.....

I think people should applaud Deaner, i dont know much about what goes on behind the scenes, but it takes a lot of money and commitment which he has shown for recent years with F.A commitment from Slough council. We saw their hand when it comes to building a school !! What is wrong with the council - they have no guts to give commitment - W****** the lot of em.

I too think Deaner doesn't get enough thanks for what he has done.I'v said this before but he has given us 5 years of football that know one was was prepared to give us,yes the club may of reformed but not at this level. He may not always tell us what he's up too but i think somehow he's gonna pull it out of the bag.Somehow............

I suspect that all that is happening is that the original 1997/98 planning prmission is due to lapse and it's a negligable amount of money to ensure it is renewed for a further 5 years. It's difficult enough to get planning at any time so why let a permission lapse for the sake of an easy renewal. It does not mean that any development has to. or will, take place, just has it has not during the period of the original planning permission. It does mean that in the unlikely event that the Thornes want to sell the stadium (if they can find a buyer) it is worth far more with the planning permission than without!

While I don't know what went on 5 years ago, I don't see how the current council are to blame. Martin Deaner didn't follow up his proposal to build the development, so the council are looking to use the land for other purposes. The reason Deaner didn't follow up the proposals varies according to who you speak to. Deaner himself said it was because the site was too close to the crematorium to be suitable. The council said he did't follow up the proposal as he could not get financial backing. Depends who you believe.
