I went to the Enfeld 1893 v Basildon Utd game at Ware FC.

A bit of a shambles with both teams having late arrivals due to traffic problems, game kicking off at 8:15pm.

A very injury ravaged Bas Utd team, fielding only four recognised first team regulars in Brad Connor, Tom Ketland, Chris Bill and keeper Dan Higley, took to the field against a rampant Enfield 1893 FC.

Also Basildon only had one sub, Hookey Jnr, who was nursing a swollen ankle from Saturday. You knew Bas Utd were struggling when Chris Bill was told to play up front!!!! It was like watching Dad's Army's walking wounded up against the SAS.

Enfield went into the break 5-0 up, just after the break, Joe Corey (Hookey Jnr) replaced Chris Bill, who limped from the pitch, to be fair he also limped onto the pitch at the start of the game.

A mixture of Enfield taking their foot off the gas and Basildon finding some resolve, the eventual scoreline was not as bad as was feared at half-time. That said, Enfield also missed a pen (Hit the post) and saw a free-kick also crash off an upright.

Bees manager John Higley will be hoping and praying that many of his regulars recover in tme for their next fixture on Saturday week.

As a Bowers fan, I never thought I'd have sympathy for a Basildon Utd side, but I do!!!!

BTW, the boy Sherwin Stanley is different gravy and is a shoe in for the DDT if he stays!!! He scored four on Saturday and another five last night, admittedly against poor opposition.

Only 3 1st team players, what happened to the rest of them,a 1st team squad should consist of about 17-20 players,if there were only 3 1st team players playing last night the manager had 14-17 1st team squad players not available for last night game, cant be all injured.

To be honest DG, I think it was a lot to do with the fact it was a nothing League Cup game that Bas Utd couldn't progress from, plus the fact it was a bloody long way away on a Tuesday night.

However, they have some genuine long term injuries including Marcus Allen, Tom Ziepe, Dean Sumner, Craig Etherington, James Dwyer (No so long term) plus one or two others. Also the likes of Rob Pudney and Kevin Ayres struggle to make midweek games that far away!!

Billsy should not be playing but it says a lot about his character that he still plays through the pain.
BTW, it was four, I forgot about Brad Connor, sorry Brad, shocking omission!! grin

Remember him well in his faded black one piece running kit.

Thought it was Roy of The Rovers who did the footy thing though! grin

Hookey,

Thanks for the update. The four first teamers that played last night are also carrying injuries and Eugene, the reserve team CB played in goal for us last Saturday, still he did save a penalty grin

Add to the injury list, Kristian Down, Robert Banks and Hastings Banda are on the injury list. I am told that there are 14 players on the injured list, but some are turning out to make up the team. I think that we have about 30 players signed up for the first team and the manager is constantly looking for players to improve the situation.

Still the reserve players are coming through and the U18s are getting a chance so it's not all and gloom. However you are only as good as the team that you can get out on the pitch.

I also agree with you that Billsy shouldn't be playing :silly:

Couldn't agree more. I've certainly never seen such long injury list. I forgot about Kristian, Banksy and Hastings.

It's a credit to JH that players are willing to turn out for him when they should really be resting.
