a real glory night at the bridge

some match days are good ones...some are bad ones and some are easily forgotten....but every now and again the footie gods come a calling to remind us all what this wonderful game is really all about and tonight at the bridge was one of them....

an ordinary first half gave no hint of the excitement to come as hastings bullied us out of our stride and went into the break one up from their first shot on goal.....second half underway with a higher tempo urchins rampant and their centre back...having already put jordon out of the game and got away with it went for a last man red on simon and janners slotted home....

for 30 minutes we looked likely winners until a soft free kick flew untouched into our net and for all the world it was over...into injury time but the never say die urchins new better..wave after wave of the now ten man urchin attacks...save after save from the hastings keeper...5 minutes into injury time and it came...an elms equaliser.....

so.....all over with a point.....?....dream on you disbelievers you......the urchins surged forward again with the ref looking at his watch and waving to the linemen and just before he blew the whistle janners flew onto a through pass and slotted home to pandamonium from the east and west sides and massed scenes of jubilation and much singing.....

a glory glory night indeed at the old stadium and one not forgotten for a long long time...

heroes one and all.... applause applause yay yay

Sadly could not make it over to the game, and what a game to miss. Just looked at the goals, unbelieveable and if that doesn't bring a few back through the gates, goodness knows what will.

We were class on Saturday and we look and sound like we were class with grit and steel tonight. That is the recipe to get through this season with a great record and have a chance of being in the mix at the end.

I cannot wait for Saturday, I hope the injured folk are not in too bad nick, but with this kind of spirit, we can ddo anything. A load of urchins behind the boys on saturday and Hendon will be quaking.

From the Hastings website

Ten man United throw it all away - 25/9/07

AFC Hornchurch (0) 3 - 2 (1) Hastings United

Janney pen 64, 90 Carey 44

Elmes 90 Eldridge 72

If ever a side contrived to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, that side was United, on the occasion of their first ever visit to AFC Hornchurch this evening. Leading 2-1 in the fourth minute of added time, albeit against the run of play for much of the second half, United first conceded a sloppy equaliser to striker Harry Elmes, before allowing Mark Janney time and space in the penalty area to grab a dramatic winner almost straight from the restart, as the home side staged an astonishing comeback. United had looked by far the better side throughout the first half, and although Lee Carey's forty-fourth minute strike came from the first shot on goal at either end, there was little doubt that United deserved their interval advantage. But the home side showed far greater purpose after the resumption, levelling through Janney's penalty, after United skipper Sean Ray had been rightly red carded for an ill-judged professional foul. Russell Eldridge scored direct from an inswinging free kick near the touchline to restore United's lead, after which the hosts, who had been forced to use all three substitutes by half time, were also left a man short, when Ade Olorunda's rash lunge led to Elliot Styles leaving the field on a stretcher. But just when it looked like United were going to be able to celebrate their first away win of the season, Hornchurch struck their late double, to leave United empty-handed on their travels once again.
