There was a report about the Real Enfield v Barking game in the NLP this week. The attendance was in double figures for what was once one of the bigger non-league matches.

Enfield Town had an average home support of 301 last season while the original Enfield FC folded at the end of the season with ‘home’ attendances in Ware of less than 100! Enfield (1893) FC is a completely new club.

What is the relevance of the 1893 then? Surely this is the same Enfield in the same way that AFC Hornchurch are the same Hornchurch!

The ‘1893’ moniker has absolutely no relevance. The new club are trying to create a perception of having a history of the old club that was formed in 1893 by using this suffix. It would be more appropriate to call the club ‘Enfield (2007) FC’ or ‘Enfield (A1170) FC’ after the road that leads to Wodson Park. Enfield (1893) FC is not the original Enfield FC for the same reasons that Aldershot Town (1992) is a completely different club to the original Aldershot FC.
