Whilst the first team were beating Chatham in the FA Cup, the reserves came up against a strong, older and physical Chatham reserves in this Kent League Division 1 encounter at Hartsdown, eventually going down to them 0-3. (notes taken by Graeme Poyser)

Chatham took the lead as early as the 2nd minute when a back pass from the Margate defence was intercepted by the Chatham No 9 who put the ball past a helpless Matt Lamprell. Two minutes later they again had the ball in the net but the effort was ruled offside. Margate then got a corner and from it Shannon McNamee got his head to it but it was comfortably saved by the keeper. Kenny Pratt then got into the area and turned the ball back to the incoming Elliott Payne but his shot from 25 yards went just over the top. In the 15th minute, Chris Lewis made a break on the right and got a cross over towards Pratt's head but the keeper got there just before to deny him.

Chatham then won a corner in the 18th minute and from it a header was directed down towards the goal but Lamprell managed to get to it. In the 22nd minute a fine move by Margate down the left resulted in Payne pushing the ball through to Lewis but the keeper made a fine save to deny the equaliser. In the 30th minute Lamprell made another fine save from a header by the Chatham no 9. A few minutes later there was the first stop in play when the Chatham centre forward was injured during which the ref had to dress down the manager who was obviously complaining a bit too vociferous. Lewis then had the last chance of the half but his strike was wide of the target.

In the 52nd minute the Chatham No 11 had a 25 yard shot saved by Lamprell. A minute later a long pass by McNamee nearly found Lewis but the ball was just too strong resulting in a goal kick. McNamee then had another 25 yard shot but his effort was hit wide. The Chatham no 11 then had another chance but drove his shot wide of post. However he made up for this when he picked up the ball on the edge of the centre circle and dribbled through to the left side of the area, before slotting the ball home to put his side 2 up in the 62nd minute.

Chatham then exerted more pressure and a ball on the right was crossed into the area to the Chatham no 16 whose shot was scooped over by Lamprell for a corner. From the corner the No 8 hit his shot wide for a goal kick. Then the ball was played into the Margate area from the centre circle but the defence was able to clear for a corner. Pratt then went down holding his leg but after treatment he resumed playing. Then in the last minute Chatham finally put a final nail in the Margate coffin when a long ball on the gate left was met by the No 10 who buried it into the back of the net, for a 3-0 victory.

Team: Lamprell, Hindley, Allen, Summers, Wheatley, Hoggart, Payne, Keci, McNamee, Lewis, Pratt subs used: Brown, Macaree, Joe Taylor.

Chatham were a much older, more experienced side than the Gate. It seemed as though every time one of the gate youngsters broke through he was quickly covered by 2 defenders( KP constantly had 2 on him ). A couple of the Chatham guys obviously spent a fair amount of time in the Gym, our lads just bounced of them.

Chatham team:

1 S Hayes,

2 T Binks,

3 T Davey,

4 T Staff,

5 S Adgie,

6 R Beot,

7 M Rowe,

8 N Minshall,

9 M Elsey,

10 L Francis,

11 J Archer,

Subs,

12 G Ravate,

14 K May,

15 A Isherwood,

16 R Nasem,

17 J Garland.

The Joe in the Gate team is Joe Taylor.

Also out of interest there was a young French kid in a green top training at both last Tuesdays and Saturdays game. He looked useful.
