The Supporters Team.

Recommended Posts

The Supporters team is now defunct due to lack of interest.

For our game with Stevenage today we only had five players turn up, that's awful. We had to borrow some of Stevenage’s players, I felt so embarrassed.

So if anyone else wants to take it on feel free but let me warn you that you have your work cut out. You will be required to do everything for the team right down to wiping their arses. Sorry that wasn't really aimed at any of the team, more at the support in general.

So as only 5 people turned up I got the money off them and the money off Stevenage but I couldn't expect anyone else to pay extra so I had to foot the £30 deficit.

With support like this we don't deserve to be in the Conference Blue Square thingy. Some of you might think this is a bit harsh but at the end of the last season there were rumours, and I was trying to organise, a game against the Directors. Now I always said that the game was at Fleet Leisure as that is where I was told it was going to be but word got out that the game was at the ground, I had 20 emails from people who wanted to play in the game. People are quite happy to play at Stonebridge Road against the Chairman and his mates but aren't happy to turn out against Stevenage, that tells it's own story for me.

This along with Jessica's thread asking for help before today's game just about sum this club up, between us we managed to recruit six people! It's a good job the club appreciate the Trust because if they don't help out then no-one does.

All we need is a few fit mid-twenties males, Slough Town have a female in their team, if some females were good enough and wanted to play then I wouldn't have turned them away.

So if anybody has the time and energy to organise it, then good luck to you. I can give you all the contact details of opposition teams, Fleet Leisure and Cascades for booking pitches and you'll need to collect the kit from me, the kit is unwashed.

It's a shame, I was really looking forwards to playing now I've got a non-Saturday job! It's wierd how we took about seventeen players to Canvey ten months ago, yet only five can turn up on our own doorstep?

Fingers crossed, somebody picks it up again, maybe more people would be interested/actually realise we had a supporter's team, if something was said on matchday or in the programme?

I apologise for not making this one game, this was because I didn't get back into Gravesend until between 10 and 11 Saturday morning, because I was having a poker night which lasted until about 5am. grin (btw, I came out with a profit for once so it was worth it grin)

Let's face it, we haven't been able to get a full team for ages, over a few games I've tried my best to help out by asking a mate or two to play for us. At the match against Dynamo Kebab, I brought along 3 of my mates and we managed to get a full eleven, although that was more like 10 because I was injuried that game.

I agree with Kayne, that something needs to be said on a matchday or in a programme, because a few have said to me that they would have played if they knew anything about it, seeing that they don't use this forum.

I can see where you're coming from Paul, plus I praise you for setting up and organising a supporters team, but, as a suggestion, on a matchday put a little poster up maybe on Kenny's programme hut, advertising a supporters team is needed, then I gaurantee that we shall have a supporters team like what Stevenage had (from what I heard they had a team of 17 or more!).

The problem is , that if this has a club backing , then yes it maybe should be publicised , but if it is just Harry trying to get a few people together for a game occassionally then the club maybe doesnt want to have its name attached if the game gets abandoned or postponed due to lack of players.

Whoever takes this on will need to have a clear vision of where to go and a "squad" of 16 reliable players paying subs so that no one gets hit with a 30 note bill

RS is right, a subs system is need. I do feel for Harry as it is obvious from reading the forum that alot of people get genuine enjoyment from playing these supporters matches. But it is not acceptable that he has to foot the bill when others do not turn up. It's alright suggestions being made in hindsight but if nobody is interested then it is irrelevent. I for one would love to be able to get out and play again.

Thanks for your support and like I say I don't really blame anyone that has turned up before and has lost interest it's more to do with our support, happy to play against the directors at the ground but can't be bothered to play against Stevenage at Fleet Leisure.

We've had a match report in a programme a while back but despite my attempts my email address was not put in. So anyway that's another thing I'd have to do, write something so that the club can publicise our games? Meanwhile all the rest of the team can do is ask on here about when the next game is.

So all I have to do is book a pitch with Fleet Leisure, or if they're full then with Cascades which is double the work, send the emails to the other club telling them about the venue with directions etc, wash the kit, post on here about the game, write something in the programme advertising the game, rather sheepishly tell the other captain that we don't have a full team and can we borrow some of theres and then foot the bill when our team don't turn up? Oh so that's all then!

Advertising the game wouldn't have worked for the Stevenage game anyway like a few of the others. I hadn't confirmed the match with FL until Tuesday, had they have said I couldn't have a pitch and I couldn't book with anyone else then that would have looked really impressive for anyone that thought they could just turn up without telling me, yes I often had people who thought it was okay to just turn up, only to find out the game wasn't on. I could have written something for the programme giving my details, set up a website and organised the team fully but this is another thing I would have had to do on my own without help from anyone else.

Anyway I've calmed down a bit now so whoever collects the kit of me will not have to wash it as it will be fully washed.

Instead of someone taking it on, wouldn't it be better if a group of us did?

When I am free on Saturday mornings (next 2 weeks max!) I will be happy to contact the clubs for direction and write for the programme. If someone else organises the pitch, someone else organises the players and someone else does the kit, then it will seem less of a responsibility per person and the chances are, with one person focusing fully on each task, it will be more efficiently ran. Paul, you did a great job, but it can't be argued that five people can do more work than one!

Volunteers for anything I've mentioned?

A good idea in Theory , but to omany people involved will go belly up if just one person doesnt complete their task. You will still need a person to oversea everything.

I am happy to help if required as I cant play due to my height problem.

Its a shame that it looks like your team has ceased as we were looking forward to our planned visit next weekend.

I can vouch for how much time and effort it takes organising a supporters team and i hope that you can raise a supporters team again as it is a great way to meet fellow and oppostion supporters.

Good luck for the future.
