Smoking

Sorry to bring up the debate again, but what are the Rules at Stonbridge Road regarding people smoking.

The reason I ask is that a Carlisle supporter has been banned from his home ground due to him lighting up a ciggie. He was approached by a steward asked to stop and refused, so has now had a year ban slapped on him. The reason given, that smoking is now banned at all football stadiums.Yet I still see smoking through out the ground at Stonbridge road. Even though there are no smoking signs as you come through the gates. are the club not leaving theselves open to a rather large fine? Or is getting people to sit in the stands, rather than stand more important ? even though there are no signs in that area to say you must be seated at all times. Or is it a matter of the stewards picking on the easiest option? There again is it that Stonbridge road is above the Law ? just thought ask, It would nice to have things made clear. coolsmoke

I thought the law related to "enclosed" public places.

Although many of the stands and terrances at Fleet are not eclosed, ie have sides or roof, I would guess neither is it a public place, but a private ground. managed by Ebbsfllet Utd.

The board could decide unilaterally to ban smoking, and that would be that.If folks don't like it, tough!

Bit harsh for us smokers. Any chance of just the tar and feathering. That sounds quite nice. Oh and by the way that's low tar.

They actually said all Football League grounds, which is indeed the case.

In non-league, provided the terrace or stand has three open sides, it seems to be at the clubs' discretion - some have banned smoking throughout the ground (e.g. Rushden) while others have not. This makes the sign on the side of Cambridge's away stand saying 'it is against the law to smoke in these premises' somewhat misleading, since it's surely in fact club policy.

I would class the ground as a public place. The actual wording is:

“England became smoke free on Sunday, 1 July 2007, with smoking in public places that are enclosed such as workplaces, restaurants or pubs being banned.”

The ground is a work place for the staff in the bar, the stewards, and the two teams and officials so it falls under the ban in my opinion. What makes the grey area is; is it an enclosed space as specified in the regulations?

No - not enclosed . Needs a roof and at least 3 solid walls , like the bar , where smoking is banned ... OR - the main wooden stand , banned cos its woody ... now , if a smoking woody is banned , could this explain the decline in attendances of young men at the Stadio del Ebby ? Are all us out-of-first-flush-of-youthers incapable of a smoking woody ? Is smoking to blame ? Are we still allowed friction burns ???? AAARRRGGGHHH - PMT kicking in ( pre match tension ) ... come on yooo reeedddsss .

u can smoke in the fleet and stonebridge rd stands and a round the back of the main and by the bar, u can't smoke in the main stand, in the bar and the toilets the club has said where u can and can't smoke, and if we go up next season it no smoking any where, other club's make up there own decision's.

It does get on my nerves when you watch one half in clean pleasant air, then second half numb nuts and his mate chain smoke for forty five minutes without a care for those around them (including their own offspring) and you have to move; which is the key to this! In a non-league ground, sitting or standing, you can at least move to get away from these people. In a ground with allocated seating if the person in front of you smokes all through the game your stuffed. Hence why the rules are not so strick at our level.
