Midfield Options

Recommended Posts

With Whelpdale & Hill gone and Matty out for the forseeable future we seem a bit light in this department, having bought only Paul Abbot into the squad.

With Lee rarely playing for a full 90m another option would be quite handy.

Any possibilities out there?

I think Wareham has played pretty well over the last couple of games, so we're obviously strong on the left of midfield. Equally, Semanshia has looked comfortable coming in on the right; as has Hodgey when he's switched flanks so I'm happy with the wide positions.

Centre mid is not so strong, although as Heffer has played most of his career there, were Hunter or Dorms to pick up a knock I would push him up and bring in Swaine to the defence.

But in came, Wareham, (at the end of last season) Abbott and Samanshia. Also we have have added Boot and Garness up front at the expense of Holland. So the squad is bigger than it was last season.

I would agree that we have no natural replacement for Matt Game, but to achieve full cover we would have to have a 22 man squad all of the highest quality.

We have of course lost Whelpdale and Allen from last season as well.

I think we have things well covered on the left, Wareham has showed up pretty well this season, but to counter that maybe Abbott hasnt quite hit top form yet, although there's plenty of time for that. It's a tough ask on Wayne in his first full season in mens football to play a position that he didnt play regularly for the under 18s/reserves. When Boot comes back I do think BWG could be an option on the right side in some games, it might be worth a try in the league cup or something to see how he goes.

Heffer into midfield would be a last resort for me, but at the moment if Leon or Dorms got injured I don't see the alternative unless Abbott has played centre-mid before? Ideally it would handy to bring another central midfield player in but even if the budget allowed it, it would hard to entice someone in given they may only get limited opportunites - Although Dorms on the left was the preferred selection in the first away game.

I wouldn't want my original comment construed as a critiscism of our existing midfield. I agree that Dave Wareham has hit the ground running this season, and Wayne Semanshi seems to be handling the step-up well although, as jl says, I believe it's not his favoured position. An interesting idea to try Bradley on the right once TB's back.

When boot and flack are fit BWG should be given a go out on the right as he has the pace and skill on the ball to beat defenders and seems able to put in good balls into the box and helps keep the forwards happy and Abbot hasn't exactly added much

Also provides the opportunity to go three up front without using a sub when chasing games

Wareham certainty deserves a chance from the start v Leyton as he seems to be playing a lot better than last season and Abbot doesn't seem to have added much to the side

After just four competitive games it's too early to be making a judgement on Abbo, in my opinion.

I think he shows a lot of promise; just not quite "in the groove" yet. And he has some big boots to fill!
