so i see platini is planning on giving the 4th champions league spot to the fa cup winners. of course the fa will back this as it will give them a bit more power and put the magic back as they want someone from outside the big 4 to play in europe.

great news for hornchurch, as we're technically now in with a shout of playing in europe, but when was the last time someone from outside the big 4 won the fa cup?

distant dream, but can you imagine the beano we'd have if we had milan, or madrid, or bayern munich, or celtic...

mental.

Well, if we're going that way, then I guess you need to look at who was FA Cup runners up, as it will be them who get the CL spot as it tends to be one of the top 4 who win the FA Cup too, so we would have had Southampton, Millwall and West Ham from the last 5 years alone. What happens when it was Arsenal vs Man Utd, and Chelsea vs Man Utd as it has been in recent years??

I'm not a big fan of the CL, ok, I'm an Arsenal man and we get in it every year, but Champions League should be for the nations champions only, in its present format, it should be renamed 'European Elite Cup' or something along those lines, as it is a super league and not a 'Champions' league, just look, England have had a team in the final for the last 3 seasons (a team in the semi's for the last 4 years), not one of them was anywhere near winning the Prem League the previous season,

Back to the original point though, no, FA Cup winners should not go into the CL, I used to like the ECWC, and the old double legged rounds from the off with names out of the hat, none of this league format where you can pretty much guess which 2 out of the 4 will go through.

The way the Euro Comps run in the early 90's was much better than what it is now....that is my opinion anyway.

i am with the above man,the champions league should be for champions and second & third place should go in the uefa cup.

Man utd v barcelona cup winners cup 1991.Don't get much bigger than that.

Also the last Four english sides to get to the final, liverpool x 2,arsenal & man utd were not even champions the previous season

At last, someone who agrees! when I say this to my frineds, they all think I'm mad, but top level football was much better then, ok, the players wasn't as fit, or probably not as good as today's, but they wasn't so far removed from the clubs fans, also, the club used to value your support, in a way, I guess Sky have ruined the enjoyment for a number of fans who used to go to games as people can't afford to go now. Take Arsenal, probably the most expensive club side to watch in the world, they go on about how they have frozen ticket prices for the last 3 seasons, sounds good on paper, but when you look at the team they had then and what they have now....the wage bill for the first 11 must be halved by now, then add the extra revenue Sky give and also the 20000 extra seats at Ashburton Grove, they are rolling in it.....oh, and the money from the flats on the old Highbury site, and they give it the big'un about freezing prices like it is a big deal, they should have dropped them by 20%

Although one thing though, I have gone off track a bit with the above rant!!I was at the Arsenal vs Barca final, and I wasn't too worried about not being the Prem Champions the previous season!!!

But point taken, it does go the other way too, I don't think teams that finsih 3rd in the CL group should drop into the UEFA either (It has probably happend lots of times, but I remember going to the 2000 UEFA Final, Arsenal vs Galatasary, both team fell out of the CL and reach the final of another Cup), but as I've sai, the double legged games from the 1st round was much better than what it is now.

the rules are rules at the moment and if it says arsenal are 4th and qualify then i am not going to argue but i used to prefer the old format. When i used to look at results i would look at all 3 euro cup competitions and there were some cracking ties every week in all 3 competitions.

Aberdeen beating Real madrid in the UEFA cup.

Would never happen nowadays because the top sides get so much more money in this format

i don't believe the trade description act has a europe-wide equivalent.

i think the worst thing about the champions league is the lyrics to the theme music. dylan eat your heart out...

Those are the best ones,

Theres all the best teams, the main event

The masters, the best ones, the best ones, the champions

The biggest and best,

A large stately meeting, the main event

These are the men,

They are the best ones,

These are the champions!

The masters, the best ones, the best ones, the champions

The masters, the best ones, the best ones, the champions
