Central Defender- the Business Case

A bit like last season when it was obvious from Mid September that we needed a third striker (we have about 6 this season),this seasons obvious need is for a strong quality central defender.

Nothing wrong with Young-but he should be learning and growing alongside a quality player.

RT needs to get this guy in now-not leave it until November. The need has been obvious since May,so despite a good effort otherwise over the summer from RT; he has'nt sorted this one;and it is already costing points(and promotion?).

Get an experienced central defender ;and it means that Macca,Jay and DS can cover central midfield between them (again-loads of wide players but only DS and SM in central role ) and give us injury/suspension cover-or even play all three in some games.

To get the right man,i suspect you would need to pay £400 week, so thats £13000 over the season-add on NI and you pay about £14200.

BUT-a consistently winning side would add 100 to the attendance at every game.Allowing for some children , but equally a bit of add on expenditure in bar/programme etc. average 'sale 'per person is probably about £8.

Thus if we play 20 more home ,plus minimally a couple of home cup games ;22 games would bring in additional revenue of £800x 22 = £17600.

(i personally think crowds will drop to below 500 as early as early september if we don't do something straight away

Thus it seems to me, aswell as a crying out need for a experience quality central defender (in the mould of Eddie Youds)there is a business case for doing so.

I'm not one to preach expenditure and a very slight risk, but for the sake of one player, it could make a massive difference to the season; and quicker its done, the quicker the club benefits both financially and on field aswell. It may also help progress us one or two more rounds in a couple of cups and thus more income coming in.

It then leaves the likes of Smith,RT and (Jay in the odd game) to provide central defensive cover only for suspensions/injuries etc.

To me-central defender is the 'missing link'and is a must do, and can be justified financially aswell, and now .

Unlike last season when RT left the glaring requirement for an alternative third striker much to late;i trust that he both wants, see's the need and gets support of the clubs Board to do this now.

Quite why a manager who was a defender has gone mad signing strikers and wingers at the expense of midfield and defence is a bit of a mystery to me.

Think overall RT has done well close season, but the imbalance of the signings remains a mystery to me.

I would even suggest that this is such a key role, that RT should persuade the Board to even pay a fee to get the right man.In the scheme of things, if we have to pay £4k to get the right man and that guy makes all the difference to the season-thats an investment-not a cost.Maybe just a little bit of the Danny money is left over to fund such a vital asset

ROFL!!

And i agree completely with what MM has stated, a decent & experienced centerback is essential.
