AIRPORTMEN JET THROUGH FIRST F.A. CUP ROUND

By Mark Wallis

Following Chelsea’s extra-time victory over Manchester United in May’s Wembley showpiece final, the F.A. Cup sponsored by E.ON is back underway, with a number of Essex clubs kicking-off in last weekend’s Extra Preliminary Round.

The action began on Friday night at the quaint Hargrave Park where a new-look Stansted side came out on top in the only all-County tie, seeing off fellow Senior Leaguers Hullbridge Sports, 2-0. A pleasing attendance of 120 saw Danny Dobson put the Airportmen in front on 18 minutes before Danny Dow completed the victory in stoppage time.

There were also impressive away victories chalked-up by Burnham Ramblers and Concord Rangers, both of the Essex Senior League. Ramblers triumphed 2-1 at Brimsdown Rovers, from the Spartans South Midlands, thanks to first-half strikes from Nicholas Muir and Danny Cross, while on Sunday Canvey-based Concord romped to a 3-1 win at Biggleswade Town. Michael Begg, Danny Cowley and Gary Ogilvie found the target for Rangers.

Barkingside trailed Corby’s Stewarts & Lloyds at the interval but surged back in the second half to earn a 5-3 victory as Mark Doyle bagged a hat-trick. Barking and Eton Manor also progressed to the Preliminary Round courtesy of home wins over Harefield United (4-0) and Colney Heath (3-1) respectively.

A host of replays have been scheduled for this week too, with no fewer than six ties involving sides from the County ending all-square. Most grateful for another chance were Tiptree United who, after taking a first-minute lead against Sawbridgeworth Town in TheFA.Com’s featured match, required a last-minute Tom Poole spot-kick to claw the tie back to 2-2. Four goals were also shared in the ties involving Saffron Walden Town (versus Wootton Blue Cross), Halstead Town (Wellingborough Town) and Stanway Rovers (Bedfont Green).

An intriguing tie at the Mile End Stadium ended in a goalless stalemate between Sporting Bengal United and London A.P.S.A., with the two Asian-orientated sides trying again this Thursday at Aveley’s Millfield ground. Disappointingly, Clapton, Bowers & Pitsea and Southend Manor slipped-out of the competition elsewhere.
