Lack of goals?

Recommended Posts

Just been looking back on the current and past 2 managers performance.

Based it since the start of the 05/06 season for Eddie, from 1-10-06 for Mark, and 17-01-07 for Darren, and this includes all competative games (leauge and cups).

Manager Denton West Wilkinson

Games 54 14 24

Points 57 5 7

Won 16 2 1

Drew 9 1 4

Lost 29 11 19

Ave points/game 1.05 0.36 0.29

Ave goals for/game 1.37 0.57 0.54

Ave goals aganst/game 1.77 2.78 3.12

What is apparent from the numbers is the relationship with the decline of points per game, against a doubling of goals against and a halving of goals for.

The other way of looking at this is the ratio of goals for and against:-

Denton 1 for : 1.29 against

West 1 for : 4.87 against

Wilkinson 1 for : 5.77 against

I think this just goes to confirm what has been voiced on here that we are scoring far to few (and the luck is not going our way - the two deflections off the post!) yet conceding "soft" goals from set pieces.

What do others think?

I think it's difficult to take the three manager's statistics cold like that and produce any kind of "proof" about anything as it doesn't take into account other factors like the loss of money, player strikes and other disruptions.

However, I do think (from the few games I've seen over pre season and last saturday)that while the enthusiasm is there for the vast majority of players, the final ball sometimes isnt'. That's not to say I don't think the strikers are doing their job - I think Matt Miller in particular has really battled to try and hit the back of the net - but the ball isn't getting to the strikers and importantly, the strikers aren't necessarily in the best position when they do receive it.

As has been pointed out on other threads, there is a lot of aerial play in the final third which would work if a)we had a tall striker at every game to take hold of it or B) the opposition's defence has a high line and we have strikers quick enough to leg it past them and onto the ball.

Unfortunately, neither of those scenarios are happening at every match and so the aerial play is inevitably lost. If we were to start playing it into feet I think we may have more success - Miller, Davies and Deaner (haven't seen Charles play yet so can't comment on him) can all hold their own against defenders and with wingers to support them we should be able to keep possession.

Of course, that course of action is dependant on whether the midfield is accurate enough to be able to pass to the forward-playing team members and as a few people have noted - some of the midfield's distribution hasn't been great.

As far as letting soft goals in goes, I think that once the management's settled on a regular keeper that will start to improve - it's hard for a back line to have confidence in their keeper unless they are there week in, week out and they know where they stand with things like clearances.

yes, it's been a rough start to the season, but let's not let our heads drop too early - look at Man Utd and Spurs dropping points left, right and centre - it happens to the best of them!

Totally agree with the issue that sometimes the strikers are in the wrong place, as last night Miller and CJ were quite often to be found chasing the same ball when it should have been just one of them with the other then making space to then receive the ball and strech the defence.

Also there were to many balls into "holes" where the nearest Slough player was over 20 yards away so it ended up being picked up by the opersition.

All the balls that went to the left wing were closed down and I belive only once did we get past the backs on that side, however on the right with George he put in the ball at least 50% of the times he received it - however he seldomly had the ball played to him when he was free!

I know the statistics are just that - numbers, and do not reflect the efforts on the pitch, however points on the board are also numbers and they dictate where you end up in the leauge.

Some times you do need to take a measure to see where you have been, where you are now , and to see where you want to be, and how you are going to get there. Sorry but being an Engineer I measure everything - just habit!

That is [****!!****]. He won games for Yeading with his goals and against the Champions in the last game of last season we may have come away with nothing but Miller was a real goal threat and nearly got us something with that great lobbed goal.

When will people who slag off Miller realise that the service he gets is appalling. He is basically being forced to chase down long balls and compete for crosses. He is never going to be strong in the air. He needs to play off a big striker who can hold the ball up and play him in behind the defence.

Martin, your right, Matt Miller can score goals as he proved when he played for Yeading and on occasions playing for us.

When he first came to us he had a reputation for scoring goals, having said that, why Yeading would let a prolific goal scorer go was strange to say the least.

We had a half decent team then and because he seemed to miss most chances that came his way I think his confidence suffered, hence his departure.

I think Matt Miller is a confidence player who needs decent players around him to give him the right service, unfortunately until he gets this and starts scoring on a regular basis some people will only see him as a player who always give you 100% but misses the chances when they come his way.

With Miller chasing down everything upfront, it can be physically demanding. Would you rather see a striker paching for goals and just making runs to get onto through balls, or a striker which chases everything down for the team? Historically, we've always favoured the latter option.

I think once the team settles down and particularly the return of Danny Jeffreys to midfield, we will see a better service to the front two.

Yes and they are selling quite well too Marcus!

I dont think we should knock any player, we all have our off days, sometimes my typing is well off target here and has caused many a laugh. We just need to keep supporting the team as best we can even though it can be very frustrating.

Guest old timer

have to agree with you in part delaney: cos boot and hodge would not have got in any of the 60's,70's and 80's teams.trouble is that todays younger supporters have no idea that the non league footballer of those early days were virtually of the same standard as pro players-but they preferred to keep their day jobs and pick up football wages.

when you think of chris mullen 40 goals a season.

roger connell, kieran sommers, joe adams, john connell, david swain, mick chatterton, rowan dodds, david kemp and the best of the lot in my opinion john ritchie etc.etc.

I'm pretty sure our current set of strikers would be able to score if the service to them was better. You can't play long, high balls to a set of midgets all day when they are being marked by 6'5" center backs.

That was one of the main positives - CJ put in excellent crosses. But even if Terry and Matt were there would they have been able to beat the defenders to the ball. They need to be hard and low for those two.
