Michael Masters Charity Match

Recommended Posts

Baldock Town Football Club would like to notify all football followers of a charity match taking place on Sunday 9th September 2007 at the County Ground, Letchworth (2pm kick-off).

The match is in aid of former BTFC player Michael Masters who was involved in a freak accident on the London Underground on his way back from West Ham v Chelsea last season, which saw him unfortunately lose a leg. Michael is doing very well in his recovery, but the club would like to raise enough money from this match to buy him an adapted car to help him get around.

Baldock Town will be taking on a team of former Southern League Baldock Town players, the club which folded back in 2001.

The team of ex-Baldock Town players will be managed by current Cambridge City Manager and former Town player and manager Gary Roberts. Gary has already sent the club a list of confirmed players we can expect to see on view.

For those who used to follow Baldock Town pre-2001 will be familiar with the likes of Marcelle Bruce, Darren Fenton, Steve Cook and Reds Legend Paddy Stanton to name but a few.

I will aim to update everyone with admission prices and programme details in the next week or so. If you can come along and support this event, everyone at the club would be most grateful.

Baldock Town Football Club have organised a charity football match this Sunday September 9th to raise funds for one of their players, Michael Masters.

Michael, of Park Close, Baldock, an young exciting wide player, played football with Baldock Town Youth FC and then moved on to play for the successful senior team, formed in 2003.

Unfortunately in April this year at the age of 20, he suffered a horrific accident on the London Underground when his leg became trapped between a train and the platform, resulting in him being dragged several metres down the station. As a result, he was very seriously injured and had to have the whole of his left leg amputated. He has since made a remarkable recovery and is living back at home.

Hertfordshire FA kindly offered the County Ground, Letchworth free of charge for the charity game and it is a way for his fellow players and supporters alike to raise money for him and show their support. Michael’s last game was in last season’s Herts Junior Cup Final in April, which Baldock narrowly lost 5-4 to Kings Sports.

Baldock Town have now moved up this season to the Herts Senior County League and continue to be sponsored by Arena Security. Despite the higher playing standard, the team has won each of their first 5 league games this season and are top of Division One.

The game on Sunday will be played between the current side and a team assembled by Gary Roberts, ex Baldock Town Manager and now manager at Cambridge City. Gary has recalled players from the former Southern League side he had 6-7 years ago. Some of the names on show include Ian Allinson, ex Baldock manager and current Stotfold manager, fans favourites Marcelle Bruce, Steve Cook and Darren Fenton and also Reds Legend Paddy Stanton, who played over 500 games for the club.

The Club is asking for everyone’s support in attending. Kick-off is at 2pm. Admission is £5 Adults, £2 Concessions and all proceeds will go to Michael.

After the match, the club along with Alan & Lesley at The White Hart in Baldock, would like to invite everyone back for a BBQ, Raffle and Disco to round off what we hope will be a successful day for Michael, who will be attending the event.

An horrific accident and a terrible thing to happen to anyone, I can only wish him well and it is good news that as you say he is recovering well enough.

I attended a lecture recently from an ex-RAF double amputee who gave a remarkable insight into his trauma and how he came completely to terms with it and became stronger than ever. As he walked onto the stage you would never have guessed he was a double amputee. An amazing story, from bean cans as legs in a POW camp, to getting sent off in a football match when one of his legs flew off and knocked out the oppo centre forward, to spending his days now in kids hospitals spreading humour and faith.

I truly wish Michael well and the very best recovery.
