Lato is this your message?

After a two year absence Wingate and Finchley resumed their membership of the Suburban League with a goalless encounter on a dreadful pitch in Ruislip. Ably managed by ex-Wimbledon player Lionel Morgan, who could have played for Tottenham had it not been for a bad injury which ended his playing career, his charges gave a good account of themselves against a physical Ruislip side.

It took ten minutes for the Wingate boys to get in to their stride until, in the 12th, Ben Lauffer tested the pint-sized Ruislip keeper from a distance, followed by a flick inches round the post from Jamie Hazel picking up an Anthony Limbrick short pass. The pitch, not fit for Sunday football, curtailed some of Wingates’ short passing game, but at the other end keeper Glen Johnson pulled off a spectacular save tipping over a twenty-five yard powerdrive.

Five minutes later he brilliantly stopped a shot from Ruislips’ centre-forward who broke through down the middle. Ruislip were dangerous going forward relying on their lone front man to produce the goods. Fourteen minutes in to the second half Nathan Eno waltzed through the home defence but sent his final shot across the face of the goal. Then followed Danny Berg clearing off the goal-line from a short shot resulting from a corner. As the game wore on Ruislip slipped in to top gear twice firing across the face of Johnsons’ goal followed by another stunning Johnson save going down to block a shot. With two minutes remaining Danny Berg let fly with a cannon drive inches wide.

This young Wingate side gave their all with the conditions hampering their progress, but each and every player played to their ability and Wingate and Finchley can be proud to have each and everyone on board and well in to the future

An unhappy Ruislip fan wants the report removed, maybe Lato can tell us if the pitch is that bad at Ruislip.

Wingate do have an very good playing surface, but I guess saying Ruislip's pitch is not fit for Sunday league with the recent rain is a bit out of order.

no that was not my reply and until I read this post I knew nothing about that game or the state of the pitch.

As Spider can confirm better than me the Grosvenor Vale surface is not the greatest but like all pitches with careful and continual maintenance it can be kept to a reasonable level. I know before the first team game that the holes 'Basil' the fox digs were filled in while his little deposits on the pitch were removed. This was the kind of work Spider. MB100 and myself also did regularly two years ago before matches as well as on one occassion myself, MB's brother (aka the Generalissimo) and three guys from Harpenden committee (regulars will know who I mean)spent 25 minutes clearing an area of stones where Basil had uncovered the drainage channel.

I don't know the current state of the pitch as I only go down to the ground for 90 minutes on a Saturday and or a Monday

The match report sounds like it was written by someone expecting a walkover and not quite being able to come to terms with not winning. The reply sounds like either a player or parent of a player defending the team. The pitch was fit to play as the referee deemed it fit. Refs at Suburban, Allied Counties and Spartan level always walk the pitch and make an inspection, if it was unplayable it would have been called off (they still get payed after all, even if they call it off).

The vale pitch is very difficult to work on, I know having spent a huge amount of time working on it. But it suffers as Lato says from the depradations of a family of foxes (as well as shallow drainage channels), which make it a constant battle to keep it flat and safe. Its not that bad at present, but its going to suffer later in the season as it hasn't been reseeded this year.

The reply wasn't me or the Generalisimo either.

Having found the original match report on the Wingate site it would appear to be amended from the version Gavin downloaded.

I assume our friends from Wingate realised they overstepped the mark and made a sensible revision.
