Questions for the thinking person

Recommended Posts

Today, I was approaching Echo Square on my mile warm up walk to the gym. (Don't panic, I always undo it all afterwards by getting the bus into town & having something with chips & 2-3 pints in The Somerset.) Anyway, there I was, Captain Healthy, ambling along, when I heard an oikish shout:

"Oi, prick!"

Now, I don't particularly see this as as accurate description of my good self, but I looked in the direction of the shout, just to satisfy my preconceptions about who'd yelled it & to see if I need to do anything about it (like run.) What I saw was a 2003 reg silver Mercedes, approaching the roundabout, with a magnificently ugly head hanging out of the passenger window.

"Do you want a fight?" he enquired.

I was so surprised: a) at the fact he looked far more like a pig than a human; B) that he was travelling in a car that must have cost 3 times what mine did & c) that he should want to pick a fight in broad daylight, at Echo Square, with a bloke easily old enough to be his dad, that I just stared at him as I walked past. Before he had time to repeat the puglistic challenge, his driver moved on.

A couple of hours later, as I was crossing the road after my healthy interlude, I held back to let a car pass. The driver was about the same age as Mr Pig, but this one bore a stunning resemblance to an amiable frog.

"Helloooo" he called in a stupidly high pitched but friendly way, grinning like a lunatic.

So, my questions are:

1. If you start adolescence looking like a rat, will the effects of junk food/cheap lager/steroids inevitably turn you into a pig?

2. If you look like a frog rather than a pig or a rat, does that inevitably mean you are much better natured?

3. Was there something in the air today to make all young men behave oddly, or did I just happen across two very different loonies?

4. If you enter young adulthood looking like a rat & metamorphose into a pig, is the final stage a drowned ferret, sitting on a park bench clutching a can of Special Brew?

5. If this is your progress through life, are you really homo sapiens sapiens, or do you belong to some inferior sub species, which would have died out millennia ago, if natural selection had been allowed to take its course?

6. Am I only asking these questions because I had an extra couple of drinks as I didn't fancy venturing out into the rain?

7. Most profoundly of all, will the Fleet make their superior fitness & skill tell tonight, or will they let a determined but less talented team set the agenda?

I had a similar thing happen in Dartford a few years ago. I just looked hard at the number plate, and then remarked,"You know that's a nice car, and an easily remembered licence plate......It would be a pity if brake fluid got spilt on it one night!"

The prat drove off at high speed, questioning my sanity and birthright! wink

This now seems a tad presumptuous. Sounded from the Internet commentary as if we were 2nd best by a long way against a neat attacking side. Have we ever played well since the start of last season when forced to adopt 442?

Still, the result isn't the end of the world or even the performance, but suddenly the injury situation looks serious. Liam gets 2 young but relatively experienced players from Woking & suddenly it looks like they could both be lost to him for the foreseeable future.
