Conference Football TV? Does the Cameraman know?

Recommended Posts

Is it still going to exist as in the past with the opportunity to watch video highlights of all our matches for a small subscription?

Whenever I log in to my old link I get a Sportal page which is very flash but only has 1 non league feature (a compilation of goals scored last season by Conference National sides) & no mention of registering to watch this season's highlights.

Am I being thick? Is the link different now the Conference has metamorphosed into Blue square?

Conference TV has now finished.

It was only a two-year deal and it has not been extended because Setanta are supposed to be showing the highlights instead (which Sky never did...they only showed live games).

I say 'supposed to be' as there are a few 'logistical' problems with the weekly Setanta highlights programme to be ironed out first.

I will still be filming all Home games for the club (i.e. providing the Manager's copies) and will be there this Saturday as usual.

Setanta won't be sending their own cameramen to Conference matches that are not being shown live. They are asking the club cameramen to give them footage, as we did for Conference TV.

There is a problem at the moment whereby most club cameramen in the Blue Square Premier League (or whatever it is now called !?) are full-time pro's who require payment from TV companies that want to use their footage (which has always been the procedure whenever we have dealt with Sky, ITV & the Beeb).
However, Setanta want us to give them footage free of charge and they are telling the clubs to pay the cameramen the filming fees out of their sponsorship money !

There is supposed to be a highlights programme starting on Setanta next Thursday, then every Thursday thereafter, but all they are getting for that at the moment is footage supplied free of charge by supporters, mainly from North & South Division clubs.

It's still at the planning stage I'm afraid.
Been massively busy during the Summer with various things.

One of the biggest problems I'm finding is that it's very difficult to obtain footage of Away games. The other club cameramen say they will send me footage but very few do because it is just too much hassle to make Mini-DV copies of their camera master tapes and post them off to each cameraman. I am guilty of that myself though.
We can't really use our own clubs' Team Managers' copies because they are all on DVD or VHS tape and the picture quality isn't good enough to re-edit.

The only footage of Away games I have got is Grays (because I also film for them), Stafford Rangers and Woking (which was sent to me on DVD instead of tape).

Some of you may remember that I used to post the odd video clip, memorable mostly for me pointing the camera at the sky, with my brother yelling like a lunatic, whenever we scored.

My reading of the thread so far is that it could impact on The Cameraman's livelihood & the position of the Club if we start posting clips on here again (even my crappy ones.)

However, rest assured, if it turns out to be ok, or just a question of upsetting some cheapskates at Setanta, I will be only too pleased to add my contributions to a regular video highlights thread on this forum for this coming season.

You'd be right there, Dave, of course. But then again at the time of posting I had just returned from an extremely pleasant afternoon & evening at The Great British Beer Festival.

Met a guy there who trawls around the country taking photos of non league grounds. I'd always had calendars from him provided by a friend at work but never met him in person. Reckons Stonebridge Road is his favourite non league ground. Perversely he seems to like all the things we moan about - rusting corrugated iron, dodgy roofing etc. Says he'd love to see us go into the League whilst still playing there. And this was before he'd sampled any of the beer! He also reckons a League game was once played at our ground, when Gillingham's was closed - early 60s?

That's right, I was there. It was against Wrexham (I think, not sure) and the Gills lost 3-0. It was the first and last Gillingham match I went to.

I emailed the Club on this & it's clear that they want to abide by League rules which forbid amateur photography being put in the public domain, So I think it's best not to stick clips on this forum. Here is the relevant extract from Roly's reply:

"Regardless of whether or not match highlights are to be provided to Setanta (and this is uncertain at this moment of time as far as I am concerned) it is League policy that all photography at Conference grounds is properly regulated. This is not always easy as I am sure you will understand but it has to be all club's stated intention that amateur photography used in the public domain is forbidden."

However, this does not mean that anyone seen with a camera will have it impounded by the Stasi:

"As we stated before what you do for your own personal use the club has no problem with."

Odd. I saw a steward during the Charlton friendly telling a guy in the new seated area to put his small digital camera way after he took a photo of the game. It looks like to me all cameras are not allowed at the ground.

The Club has to follow the rules & tell the stewards to enforce them. The stewards are not to know whether anyone with a camera is going to keep the stuff for his personal use or go posting it on a public site.

I'd guess the directors trust Mr S to keep to his word & probably wouldn't go telling him to put his camera away. However, a steward probably would & would only be applying the rules consistently.
