Should SSMFL play Boxing Day games?

I agree with fixtures on Boxing Day but disagree with them being local derbies.

 

A local derby = bigger than average attendance = more dosh.

 

Boxing Day fixture = bigger than average attendance = more dosh.

 

So what's the point of combining the two and having only one larger pay day instead of two?

Can't agree with you there, Football Man. I think it's the added spice of a local derby which brings even more people out on Boxing Day. Our past experience bears this out.

And also if it's not a local derby it means one of the sides may have to make a lengthy away trip which is also undesirable!

In the Ryman League we always had by far our best crowd on Boxing day - between 350 and 600, depending on whom we played. Last season our best crowd was 189. Now another 200 spectators at a home Boxing Day game would generate us about £700 extra at the gate, plus huge bar takings. Easter Monday afternoon is not far behind - blokes throughout the land are desperate to get out to a match on Boxing Day or Easter and better gates are guaranteed.

I know that, on the downside, it may spoil players' and match officials holiday breaks, but I suspect that many of them are amongst the blokes who are desperate not to go to IKEA or wherever. Views, anyone?
