Should SSMFL play Boxing Day games?

Recommended Posts

I personally found it disappointing when Hertford joined the SSMFL that games were not scheduled for Bank Holidays, especially Boxing Day and Easter Monday. In the Ryman League we always had by far our best crowd on Boxing day - between 350 and 600, depending on whom we played. Last season our best crowd was 189. Now another 200 spectators at a home Boxing Day game would generate us about £700 extra at the gate, plus huge bar takings. Easter Monday afternoon is not far behind - blokes throughout the land are desperate to get out to a match on Boxing Day or Easter and better gates are guaranteed.

I know that, on the downside, it may spoil players' and match officials holiday breaks, but I suspect that many of them are amongst the blokes who are desperate not to go to IKEA or wherever. Views, anyone?

As a player (no comments please) I'm happy not having to play Boxing Day!

I think Boxing Day games are a good thing but as local as possible.

Perhaps they need a proposal from a member club, to force a vote on this?

Horace - We have been over all of this exactly a year ago to the day (see link) and I repeat that I am not in favour of Boxing Day fixtures, for once I agree with Eagles1981 that it is a religious holiday and should be treated as such, you only seem to be worried about the money reading between the lines of your post:

The one reason that they dont have a mid season break (at christmas) in this country is because the revenue generated over the christmas new year period...so Horace is spot on about trying to generate more money for small clubs trying to pay the bills....and if people want to go to church they know were it is !

I didn't expect you to agree with me - it's a discussion, so you are allowed to have a different viewpoint! You didn't have to "read between the lines" as my point is wholly about money! With a home fixture on either Boxing Day or Easter Monday afternoon we can make up to an extra £1,000. That is not to be sniffed at (cue Greg Dyke with a joke)

Horace - Yes but money is not everything, the SSML are one of the few league's that have it's priorities right as Christmas is a time for families and to be at home on Boxing Day playing games and watching The Great Escape.

sorry rhodsey but horace is right here...boxing day is big revenue for NL footie and anyway....money aside..... who in their right mind wants to sit indoors with grumpy relatives stuffing their fat faces.... arguing over the telly and farting when we can be at a footie match on a crisp boxing day afternoon... yay
