Margate 1 Canterbury 2

Here is a brief report from canterbury official site.

(interesting how a newly reformed junior club gets news out before our established club !!

http://www.canterburycityfc.com/news_10763.html

Don't know if anyone went but interesting that according to that report we had youth AND EXPERIENCED players out for the 'Gate.

Wonderif that is correct ?

Interesting pre-match postings on the canterbury forum about a 'big crowd expected .

What they don't know of course is that we are such a rich club, that we don't need spectators so games are not publicised.

Another wasted opportunity !!

Do you think it is the directors aim to have no customers/spectators at our games and have all matches played behind closed doors !!

This was a good game with some good performances from established reserve players and those that filled gaps from u18s. City players were "game wiser" and treated this one as more than a friendly, some nasty threats to those who looked like they might then stand off. Our keeper made some fine saves and kept us in the game. Elliot Payne shone out at left back and put in his usual standard of free kicks/corners and crosses. We did have one good chance to go 2-1 up but lob just went wide from a player who for those who have seen him play know that he normally puts these away. All in all for a scratch side of all sorts they played really well. With some care Margate could have a handful of first teamers from last years u18s and reserve for the future.

I would like to add that the game was played at a really competitive pace, and the lads showed good fitness, fight and stamina. More people should go to see these games, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and there were good skills on display.

Where else on earth can you get that much entertainment for two quid?

You are absolutely right MF .

A bit hypocritical of me to comment when i live 230 miles away and don't go to reserve matches, but it is so frustrating that the club does nothing to promote this revenue-albeit small-earner.

Its like an add on product-in business-add-ons are vital.

It does not need big expenditure to promote these games-just put them on the website to start.

There again-we are obviously such a rich club and don't need any money do we.

Equally, i'm sure the reserve players would like to play in front of 150 people as opposed to 40 people.

The reserve fixtures do offer a real alternative on a Saturday. Last season I must admit I went to quite a few away games but this season I have decided to be more selective and going to a few places does not interest me at all (eg the cherry red fans stadium in Norbiton). Therefore, I will go to resssies instead.

After all watching the ressies you hope to see the players of the future.

Personally I could not understand what the Margate stratergy was. Only in that they were trying to nulify the centre of the park. There was very little width being shown at all. It was as if all the midfield were in the centre and no-one out on the flanks. If a ball went out left all the blue shirts were over that side and if the ball was on the right all the blue shirts were on that side.

Talking to a couple of others this was how they started off on Saturday against Dover Reserves but after going 2-0 down they brought on a wide winger (who apparantely wasn't on show last night).

Apparantely the move quickly tamed Dover's left back who had been running riot down our right, their left, flank.

In fairness if it's some sort of system the management is trying well then fair enough. Yet I believe one has to use both flanks to their full. Let's face it, I know it was from a free kick, but our only ball came from out wide.

Playing men out wide all the time opens oppositions up either round the back or creating space in the middle.

I know which way I want to watch football being played and it isn't a game of nulification. They should be allowed to go out there and express themselves and enjoy it.

I think the thing to remember here is that this team was a scratch side, some of the younger players had`nt even trained with the reserves before Wednesday`s game. There was a 16 y o and at least 3 17 y os playing as wll as a large amount of last years u18s. This team was put together on the night because other reserve players had played earlier in the week. There may have been short comings but this was not about a style it was to see who could make the step up to reserve level against a reasonable first team. Come the start of the season it will be a well balenced squad of players.

I`m looking forward to seeing them develope, perhaps into first team players, which is what the management are looking for. To echo margatefan it`s £2 well spent.

Seems right to me and overall, a pretty good perfomance i would think.

Tougher for reserves this year in a better league, but preparations seem from afar to be going quite well,(3 friendlies played ?) as don't think reserve proper season starts until right at end of month.

Looks like he will have a 'squad' by mid month to give them a couple of weeks squad training before the league games. i assume at moment its very much a question of filtering in/out who is good enough.

MW did a great job last year, and no reason why he can't do the same again
