Dorking 1 Croydon 0: Friendly 24th. July

Recommended Posts

Report from DFC Web-Site, pasted with permission

"An expertly executed penalty from Justin Georgiou early in the second half gave Dorking another pre season win on Tuesday night, this time over a good, strong Croydon side.

The win gives Dorking manger Tony Webb a good yardstick as to how his side is shaping up as croydon had finished high in the Kent League last season, an equivalent league to the Combined Counties League, and he will be delighted with his new sides progress. With more players due to join the squad in the coming week, Webb can be pleased with progress to date

An even first half saw both sides create chances, John McBride in the Dorking goal though commanding his area well

Dorking shaded the opening of the second period, the lively Georgiou first winning them scoring his penalty, georgiou having returned to Meadowbank in the week after spells last season and the season before. . As the game wore on, both sides had chances , Billy Ramsey inches away from heading a second goal from a Kev Terry cross, but 1-0 was probably a correct scoreline on the balance of play

Dorking now face Corinthian Casuals on Thursday before a double header against Walton Casuals on Saturday, the first team playing at 2pm and Dorking's new U18 side then playing the Walton reserve team at 4pm. Both games are at home."

My additional comment would be that if Croydon's finishing was improved they could have won the match.

The term 'put some hair round it' applied to their strikers

Thanks for the report JR. I've heard rumours that our top scorer from last season was training with a Ryman League club last week. So I guess he probably wasn't playing for us.

Looks like we'll be missing him. Early days.

Alb Ees, if you're going to Epsom v Croydon tonight, a match report would similarly be appreciated

Epsom & Ewell dominant against Croydon

Epsom & Ewell were the dominant side in this evening's friendly and the 1-0 score line could have been greater. The home side opened the match with the wind at their backs as Croydon had trouble getting use to the gale force wind in their faces allowing Epsom & Ewell to set up numerous attacks. Epsom & Ewell were denied a perfectly legal opener on 12 minutes when a cross from the right wing saw Darren Smith time his run to connect with the ball to send it into the bottom corner from 12 yards out but the assistant was flagging for offside for another Epsom & Ewell player a further 10 yards away who was not active in the play. The E's took the lead on 35 minutes when a quickly taken corner was floated into the far post for Chad Heuston to score past the Croydon keeper. Croydon could have been level on 38 minutes when a long ball found an unmarked Croydon player in the Epsom box, his shot cannoning off the inside of both posts before bouncing out for Charlie West to clear the loose ball. Zach Powell saw a drive on 39 minutes from just outside the box comfortably saved by the Croydon keeper and a Darren Smith shot from 12 yards out on 43 minutes was blocked by a Croydon leg, the ball spinning towards goal but bounced just wide of the post

With the wind in their faces in the second half, Epsom & Ewell took little time in dealing with the conditions but the visitors had the conditions in their favour as the E's were pressed back, but the home side were doing a good job in frustrating Croydon who were forced to take shots from distance. Croydon thought that they had equalised on 65 minutes when a corner saw a header on the edge of the six yard box that was deflected off Chris Roberts' body and blocked on the line by Charlie West's boot. Chris Robert's was forced into a two fisted punch save on 68 minutes as a cross flicked on fell inside the six yard box, Robert's managed to get both fists on the ball split seconds before the boot of the incoming Croydon player. The flagging Croydon side allowed Epsom to have opportunities in the last ten minutes, Jordan Ellis saw his effort deflected wide on 82 minutes, Nick Drew managed to beat three sliding tackles before curling a shot from just inside the box that managed to flick the outside of the post on 86 minutes and a low cross on 89 minutes saw the ball a yard too far in front of Daniel Jackson as he was unable to get a clean contact on the ball as it was guided into the visitors keepers gloves.

As far as I'm aware, we put out a similar mixture of first teamers and triallists in both games. But I don't know any details yet

Took 21 to Dorking
First half - 7 first teamers plus 4 trialists
Second half - 3 first teamers plus 8 trialists

Would have beaten Dorking quite comfortably if we took our chances.

Only Took 13 to Epsom & Ewell (inc 2 keepers)
First half - 3 first teamers plus 8 trialists
Second half - 2 first teamers (3 if you include the keeper playing on the right wing) plus 9 trialists

Had two blatent penalties turned down but the result was probably about right at the end of the day. Horrible weather, more like October then end of July.

I am surprised Dorking are allowed to play any games at the moment as my understanding was they were suspended by the Surrey FA on the 23rd July due to non payment of money.

I guess it must of all been paid off then or maybe a big misunderstanding by the Surrey FA, I am sure it is the all their fault!

Also hear that ATM ( Old Guildford City Chairman) has got involved with Horsley FC, don’t know what he is doing down there but must of given up on Dorking.

Your understanding is slightly wrong young Onlooker. Maybe you should change your crystal ball supplier !

There was a mix-up over payment of fines caused by the departure of certain members of DFC staff. When this oversite came to the attention of the Management, it was immediately dealt with to the full satisfaction of the Surrey FA.

I have no idea or interest in APM's, (not ATM, incidently), current footy position. Last we heard in the Meadowbank clubhouse, (recently), was that he is seeking a PLAYING position ! Then again, the Stella was flowing rather copiously at the time !!!!

Pleased that has been cleared up, looks like the Club Secretary has it all under control.

APM playing again, I did hear on the other message board that he had gone preseason some where. Maybe he has lost the weight, I do remember a few games I saw when he played for Dorking many year ago but that was many years ago, but he had a few good games.

Anyone know what the Lunns are up to?

Continuing our Combined Counties League tour last night, we won 4-1 at Raynes Park Vale last night.

I believe we had a fairly similar squad out to the one that played Dorking - I'm sure Croydon Dave would be able to confirm as he seems to be either the only supporter we have that goes to PSF's, or more likely playing in them (still haven't worked out who he is, although I have my suspicions!) - Difference was that this time we took our chances.

My source said that RPV looked a 'fair' side

Nice result, Trammy.

Bodes well for DFC.

I heard a very odd rumour that we will be testing a different squad against Slough.
