Anyone been to a pre season match today?

Recommended Posts

I went to see Edgware play Met Police Bushey, the Wares had a mixture of 1st teamers and youth players with some notable 1st team players missing though injury.

The Wares drew the match 4-4 after at one stage leading by 4-1. Fair play to Bushey a side some 3 levels below Edgware in the Herts County league!

Still it was only Edgware's 1st pre season match.

Hi Gav, I heard your manager Steve ? on TalkSport today talking to Mike Parry and Graham Beecroft. He spoke passionately about Edgware's plight and got his point across well. Well done Steve.

I watched some of Concord Rangers v AFC Hornchurch today.

NAC, I dont know where you got your information from, but I can tell that yesterday a large Edgware squad turned up for the clubs first PSF, which inclued ALL of last seasons squad plus some additions from the clubs youth team who won their league last season.

The club WONT be paying ANY players this season, (Maybe a cup run in the trophy or FA cup would give them the chance of some prize money...not sure) which goes to show the great team spirit that exsists within the club.

From the clubs official site

"Harrow and Edgware have agreed the terms of the ground share agreement and we have now to wait for the league to ratify the document before both parties sign it. We feel that both clubs can work together for the benefit of each other and it's a credit to the committee of Harrow that they agreed this deal which allows the Wares to continue.

We've done our bit, now it's up to you, the supporters, to get behind the club and support the boys who have all committed themselves to play for nothing this season to help get the club back on it's feet.

What can you do for your club, help on match days, raise funds, secure a sponsor, write an article for the programme, think about it, it's your club

The long term aim of the Management is to secure another ground of our own, for this we need funding and any amount will help, remember Oak trees grow from little acorns"

..

Compare this to the events at Slimbrige FC where the club could not take their place in the Southern League after winning promotion form the Hellenic last season. The Slimbridge player are asking for a pay rise FOUR times more then what they were getting last season. Now they are not sure they will even run a club this season, two very differnet outcomes and obvioulsy two VERY different sets of players!

...

Todays NLP has a follow up article on Edgware from last week, and in the letters page a letter from our club captain Rory Smith along with a pic of him holding the Championship Sheild last season!

Thanks for letting me know, no offence intended but I only asked as Chalk Lane tittle tattle is notorious, I don't know how long you have been a player there but it is real garden fence and Chinese whispers stuff.

Okay but I'm sure it won't be long before you're bombarded with old wives tales, listen out for one in particular about a certain game on 30 December last year. Good luck for next season in the Premier Division.

Gavin - Yes I gather NeedaColour plays for them but to be fair has only just joined so probably doesn't know what they're like.

We haven't got any friendly games lined up for the Copthall Stadium as yet but if we have an early season midweek game or are drawn at home in the Challenge Trophy or London Senior Cup you will obviously be more than welcome and we will roll out the red carpet for you.

Thats very kind of you Rhodes, I will make sure I get to a match at Copthall and see Kentish Town. I have only ever seeen Rugby League at Copthall, never seen a football match there.

Do you know if any other football teams have ever played at Copthall?

In hindsight I would not have minded Edgware playing there, although it does have a running track around the pitch, the seating stands offers a good view but I dont think it would be up to Ryman div 1 standards, but I could be wrong.

I found this from the clubs in crisis site, its regarding Hendon and the story is from last year.

A couple of interesing points, 1, The cost that Hendon would have to spend on Copthall Stadium, and 2, the quoute that not paying the players would result in relegation.

Do you think thats true, that not paying the players of any team would result in relegation?

As you know Edgware are running on NO budget this season and the playing staff will not be paid, does that mean relegation for Edgware then? I dont agree that it signals relegation, but it does mean that players are in danger of being headhunted from other clubs. I am more worried about that fact that Edgware have decided to withdraw their Youth and Reserve sides due to no finance. Both sides last season were succesful and in the case of the reserve side were a big reason why the first team enjoyed so much success.

............

However, the cost of a move to Barnet-Copthall was significantly under-estimated when the move was planned and instead of £300,000, as originally thought, the figure is likely to exceed half a million, or approaching double.

Without any other backing, the club would not be able to afford such a move and plans had to be made for an alternative approach. With the prospect of the club losing both its owners and its ground, Hendon FC has to undertake a major restructuring. Four options were available: 1. Copthall: This was not only the most expensive, it was effectively not viable and Mr Bedford admitted that this was no longer possible. 2. Folding: This would bring to an immediate end to 98 years of football and is still a possibility. 3. Merger: This would be with another local club, but the reality is that Hendon FC would probably lose its identity. 4. Ground share: The club would enter into an arrangement with another local team, most probably Wingate & Finchley, a club of nearly similar status, situated just a couple of miles north of the present ground.

Mr Bedford went on to explain the costs of running a club at the present level. Ryman League Premier Division is Level Three of the Non-League Football Pyramid (Wingate & Finchley play at Level Four - other local clubs, such as Kingsbury Town, Edgware Town and Wembley all play at Level Five) and to run Hendon FC in 2005-06 will cost £240,000, of which wages for all the staff - playing, management and administration - is £120,000. The club's present income is just £30,000, excluding any monies paid by the owners, with £13,700 being generated by gate revenue. Clearly this financial situation is untenable and a remedy has to be found. Not paying the players would result in a saving of maybe £40-50,000, but would almost certainly result in relegation.

Gavin - Are you sure that's not all old hat, I don't see how the Copthall Stadium was not viable and too expensive for Hendon when Kentish Town have managed to get it, I can't believe that my negotiating skills are any better than David Bedford's although, as the likes of Football Man and Horace know, I tend to press the flesh which goes down a lot better than the formal approach. It will be interesting to hear from SteveR at some point what Hendon's plans are for the coming season, they seem to have received another stay of execution at Claremont Road.

Hendon appear to be very quiet on what their plans are for the future. They played thier 'last' ever match at Claremont Road in 2005/06, but will be starting the new 07/08 season there, having never left.

I dont know what the clubs plans were for Copthall, I am sure they had planned to redevelop the site and maybe make it closer to the pitch. I cant belive that it would cost anywhere near £300,000 let alone double that to bring it up to Ryman League Prem standard!!!! Not unless as I say they wanted to do a complete redevelopment of the site.

The story is from 2006
