Long Buckby, tough games for Hoddy and V&E...

Long Buckby could be the surprise interlopers in the Eagle Bitter United Counties League Premier Division title race this season after manager Glenn Botterill's impressive list of summer signings.

Strikers Carl Holmes (pictured) from Cogenhoe United and Ben Foster from Northampton Spencer will join the experienced former Rushden & Diamonds, rugby Town and Stamford man Kevin Slinn up front at Station Road to give the Bucks added firepower.

Meanwhile, ex-Cogenhoe captain Richard Bunting, iron man Daniel Burke and Spencer's Jamie Wright will bolster the midfield.

The much-travelled Stuart Smeathers, who was withWellingborough Town and Brackley Town last term, and central defender Mark Njotsa, formerly with Arlesey Town, will also add depth to Botterill's first-team squad.

Even so, the cautious manager refused to predict a Premier Division championship bid when demanding only that his players, "improve upon last season's twelfth position."

The Bucks only narrowly avoided relegation in the two campaigns before that, but have a vastly-improved squad now as the only defector is Ollie Wilkinson to Corby Town.

Last season the Station Road outfit took twenty-nine points from the last sixteen league games under Botterill following the controversial sacking of player-manager Aidy Mann.

Refreshed by a recent holiday in Egypt, Botterill will see his players undergo six weeks of gruelling training with fitness guru Steve Gee.

Seven friendlies will also be played in the month leading into the new campaign.

Home games against Hoddesdon Town and Barton Rovers could pave the way for an FA Cup clash with Corby Town, while Broxbourne Borough will visit Station Road in the FA Vase.

Of the new signings, Holmes, Bunting and Foster look potentially the most exciting with the latter a former top scorer at both Spencer and Ford Sports.

Foster netted fifteen times for the Motormen during the 2005/06 campaign, including a hat trick against the Bucks in an early season UCL KO Cup 5-1 success at Station Road.

Where is Long Buckby anyway? Sounds like a cartoon character rather than a place!
